Pretty much the same question I asked about H322.

Could you share experience using Hodgdon 4895 & cast bullets with bottleneck rifle cartridges?  An old Handloader article written by Woofers mentioned its easy to burn feature and it’s value as a reduced load powder.

Thanks, Bill C.

My .257 Roberts Ackley Improved shoots very well with it. Only 50m/55y but shows the point.

When I was shooting 300 yard matches, I loaded 28 grains of H4895 under the Lyman 311284. That load would shoot better than I could hold at that range.

Nice group there Jeff.  Do you remember the % of case capacity you were using?

Ric, were you shooting an 06?  Military competition?

I’m thinking more and more about powders that ignite easily and consistently (like 4759, 2400) in bottle neck rifle cartridges.

30 cal cast shooters running 1600 - 1800fps are only using half the case capacity because modern smokeless rifle cartridges (post 30-06 /1909?) were designed to use more of the case capacity with most running 2400 to 2800fps.  Thanks.

H4895 and IMR 4895 are both excellent powders for use with cast bullets in most bottleneck cartridges, especially with medium to heavy weight cast bullets.  With most cartridges in barrels having 9 - 12" twists excellent accuracy.  I've been using both 4895s for 55+ years in cartridges from the 222 up through the 375 H&H with excellent results, especially when velocity is in the 1750 - 2100 fps range and a dacron filler is used.

Wm Cook,

Yes, '03 with 6X scope and bullet seated to engrave when closing the bolt. I always tapped the case head to position the powder before laying it on the follower, so never needed a filler or anything.

4895 is stable with reduced loads. My highest ever score was shot with a 25 caliber on a hot calm day. ( 391 ) Many 308 shooters use this powder. That is if you can find it and afford it. LOL

I use the same load as RichinYakima, 28 grains and 311284.  I use it in 3 different rifles, Ruger #1, Rem 760, and Rem 03A3. Sometimes I use a filler and sometimes I tap the case on the bench before loading.

Most of my loads for 303 British,308 Winchester and 30-06 with cast bullets, use H4895 or very similar rifle powders.28 grains would be the most used and with Dacron filler.I have gone a grain or two higher but 28 grains is a safe bet.

Varget and 135 work pretty fair in the 30br with cast bullets too.

There is something going on with H4895 and H4198.  Got an email from Hodgdon say we got them in and you better get then now because there won't be anymore.  I bought some H4198 and interesting on this is the powder is made in Austria, printed right on the bottle.  Lane Pierce wrote an article about reloading and said we better buy up all the componants we can get because things are changing. I also hear that Hodgdon's not doing well.

This is what's supposed to be available in Australia (not Austria). No new 2205 (H4227) yet.

2207 = H4198; 2208= Varget; 2206H = H4895; H322 = 2219; 2209 = H4350 etc

ADI rifle powder prices still not too bad by our standards. Other brand rifle and pistol powders and primers absolutely obscene.

You are only as good as your library.

Lane Pierce wrote an article

MP, where did you see that article.

I swore off 1lb bottles and only buy powder by the jug now.  If Hodgdon makes any 5744 I’ll have to mortgage my house.  Waited two years for H322 (.222 jacketed) and it finally surfaced two weeks ago at Bruno’s.

The most consistent source for powder is VihtaVuori.  Dollar for dollar, and how well it works with cast, N110 is the most underrated cast powder that’s readily available.  Bill C.

Lane wrote that articel in the April Shooting Times I believe it was.  Now he only talked about buying reloading componants, not that the powders I said might be gone forvever.

You sir of course are right, I read the bottle wrong.  Thanks for catching that.

I'm assuming the original poster is talking about cartridges like the .308 or .30-06. I've used H4895 and it works well, but I've also had good results with Reloder 7 and IMR-4198. I still use SR4759 but I can duplicate SR4759 accuracy results with 5744. In fact, I've generally seen at least slightly better overall accuracy with 5744 as opposed to H4895.
