Hello: After getting my casting problems worked out thanks to the forums help i have a question. Would my 220 gr. .312 gas check bullet be viable in a M-1 garand? I have loaded it for a 30-40 1898 Krag and a Remington 1903 A3. Looking through some of the past posts i wonder if this bullet might not be a good idea in the garand. I do have a 170 gr. .311 gas check mold. Would that be a better choice? Three rifles with one mold would be nice if it is safe to do. Thanks in advance, mike

I do it. Mine is in 308 though. You may need to seat bullets deep in the case . Might give you a chance to dispel the gas check below the case neck myth. I need to use above 35g of powder to run the action. Match your speeds to that charge and whang away.

Not to hi-jack the thread, but what powder were you using at 35 grains?

I tried my .308 Garand with cast for the first time a couple weeks ago.  I used the NOE version of the Lyman 311299 weighing 210gr lubed and checked starting with 28 and 29 grains of H-4895.  At 29 grains I was getting about 75% reliability of cycling the action.  I was going to try 30 and 31 grains the next time out.

I’ve used Winchester 748, IMR 3031 and 4320 and Accurate Arms 2200. I haven’t used IMR 4895 but I understand it may be one of the best for this. I use either a good tough alloy, water dropped wheel weight bullets or oven heat treated and quenched bullets may be needed.

Not a Garand but an AR10 in .308;I used 4227 under a 180gr Lee gc.I don't remember the charges(this was in the early '80s)but I remember the load clocked around 2000fps.Accuracy was minute of 2 liter coke bottle(plastic...not glass)and reliability 100%

I think that H4895 was the powder the Garand was developed with.

A similar burning rate is Best. The pressure curve is what limits bullet weight.

I've used IMR3031, IMR4895 and Varget.

Bullet weights are limited to 150gr -172grs.

I learned to load for the Garand in the 1960's.  Lead bullets were not used. I've learned now that lead CAN BE loaded for the Garand.

Used the #311413 over H4895, loads at 60% of maximum. It's a reduced load. Have manually operate the bolt. But You can work up from there.
