It's me again,

I know you have heard me rant about the NRA's publication Shooting Illustrated and the American Rifleman.. I received the latest issue, of Shooting Illustrated, yesterday and I usually throw it in the trash without ever looking at it. I made the mistake of skimming through it and there it was. One of the most informative articles that you ever saw. Yes ,you uninformed shooters out there, I bet that none of you knew that old military arms such as the M1 carbine-M1 Garand-Winchester Model 97 trench guns and yes even an old Ithica Model 37 shotgun along with 1911 45 ACP'S could be used for home defense. And all of this time I thought only black plastic was the only weapons that you could possibly use for self and home defense. Are there gun users out there this dumb or is it the writers and editors that are this dumb .I tend to think it's the writers and editors who are absolutely eat up with it.

When I renewed my NRA membership and decided to switch publications, I was told that "Shooting Illustrated" was much more technical that the American Rifleman. My personal objective is: I'm going to quit letting this kind of rag eat on me so bad. I'll never look at it again.

Commercial firearms magazines have been going downhill for years. It’s not just American Rifleman/Shooting Illustrated. The increased gun ownership has diluted the knowledge base/competency of shooters since the crime bill panic that caused increased gun buying in 1994. Panic gun buying has accelerated with every political bump since. The gun magazines increasingly cater to this expanding pool of new and ignorant shooters (maybe just buyers) to please their advertisers. This trend also leads to the inane and endless discussions in print and online of things like the proper “everyday carry” gun, cartridge choices (9mm v .40 v .45 etc), and the back biting /bullying on line when you dare not to support someone’s bias.

There are bright spots like the CBA and the “Fouling Shot” . There are several decent websites too. But the world was better when Kieth, Cooper, the Askins, Skelton, O’Connor, Carmichael, Page, and so many others were writing. They might have been opinionated but they seemed to be honest. There are a very few decent writers today, but if you look they are there. Thankfully Ed Harris hangs out here. Lots of smart and generous folks here too. We are blessed by the internet. I’ve benefited from so many people I’d never have known existed without the internet. So I subscribe to the “rags” and look for the ruby in the manure. Occasionally I find one.

There is nothing in today's shooting magazines nor the magazine-format shooting web articles worth the time to read.

My Scottish Frugality Gene prevents me from spending the money to buy these rags and I am glad.
