Which 180 grain bullet 4895? I presume you're talking cast right?

If shooting an '06 the charge of 28.5 of Varget is a bit light. Are you using a Dacron fill or orienting the charge?

I shoot 36 grains with Accurate 31-160H or 30 grains with NOE clone of #311299 with 1 grain Dacron fill tucked loosely into case neck. Federal 210M primers.

Agree with Ed Harris, that is a bit light of a charge of Varget under a 180 gr cast bullet in the 30-06.  I also suggest you add the dacron filler and then use 28.5 gr as a starting load working up in 1/2 gr increments to 36 gr.  If you have any of your namesake [4895], start at the same 28.5 gr, use the dacron filler and work up to 33 gr in 1/2 gr increments.

If you happen to be shooting a .308 Win. the 28.5 is a start load and something around 30-32 grains should be a sweet spot with 31-160H or similar. I use 30 grains with #311299 in the .303 British and Krag also.

Couldn't agree more, an excellent load to "start" with in those cartridges and, many times, when a dacron filler is used it's an excellent place to stop. LMG

You may want to check the barrel’s throat. Mine was a high power match rifle before I got it. It’s throat is .314” . 100 round matches are hard on barrels.

Especially if you use a high antimony contest alloy such as Linotype. Antimony is very hard and brittle and more abrasive to the throat then powder gases and unburned powder kernels passing over it.
