taper inside case necks

I have been using a Forster neck trimmer with a VLD  inside neck reamer.  I do not remember the angle of the VLD reamer--it cuts a much more shallow angle than the other inside reamer, to prepare a case to use VLD bullets.

If one uses a taper pin reamer or a hand held inside reaming tool there is no control of the depth of the cut and therefore no control of the neck tension.  I do not know whether this makes any difference in accuracy, but it gives the cast bullet a nice tapered case to start into with no shaving off lead with tight tension.

I got the tool from Midway.

When using the hand held 9 degree taper reamer the seated bullet is not in contact with the reamed part of the neck and cannot affect neck tension.

See TFS #223 and 240 for why worrying about variation in neck tension, no matter how reasonable it may sound  to you, is a total waste of time.

oh, another cat-skinning episode:

i remember a neat idea from the Fouling Shot from a few years ago:: ......  grind a relief in the top of the collet in your Lee collet sizer .... this then leaves the mouth of the neck unsized and looser ..easy to start oversize cast bullets .... sorry i can't remember the contributor who submitted that idea .

That modification of the Lee Collet sizer does work. I used them for a while until I started buying FLS bushing dies. Still do for the calibers that the bushing dies are unavailable.

Grind off 1/16" or so off the top of the sizing petals.
