SAWING OFF A RIFLE BARREL, 3/28/2017

Most Savage barrels in 22-250 have a 12” twist. My most accurate cast .22 bullet is a modified Lyman 225646 that is ~.692” long and requires an 11” twist or faster. I had a 223 Rem Savage barrel with a 9” twist, 22” long, and Ken Campbell re-chambered it to 22-250. It shot almost as accurately as my other 22-250 barrels. I wanted to try the barrel on a Savage Striker pistol, so I sawed it off with a normal hacksaw to ~ 16.5” , filed the muzzle about flat, and chamfered the bore a little with an RCBS chamfer tool.

On the Striker action the barrel shot the 225646M into 100 yard 5 shot groups that averaged 1.480” for three sets of five 5-shot groups-15 groups. These with 7.5 gr. Titegroup.

With jacketed bullets, 5-shot 100 yard groups, 7.5 Titegroup, “:

Nosler 40 gr. Varmageddon .55, .9, 1.15; Avg. .867

Hornady 55 gr. V Max, .975, 1.15, .875; Avg. 1.0

Hornady 60 gr. SP,.7, 1.2; Avg. .95

Hornady 68 gr. BTHP, .9, 1.05; Avg. .975  These were tipping slightly

The jacketed bullet average for 4 bullets 10 groups 50 shots was .945”

hi joeb...

geepers there is a lot of interesting stuff there ...

be fun to see what a 225438 ( 45 gr ) might do in a 9 twist .... although that chamber throat was optimized for the longer bullet , maybe just seated by the gas check .  but that 438 shot better  in my 222 14 twist.... , than  462 and 107 designs.  unexpected .

thanks for the report.

Ken, the 225438 mold id going back to you with the 45 stuff, the bullet is too short for my fat flabby fingers to hold, and I can't get the gas checks started. And I drop most of them anyhow.

I like the part about sawing the barrel off and filing it “about flat” and chamfering it with a tool not designed to true up crowns -- and of course it shot just fine.  Shooters paying attention have known since Dr. Mann's experiments that the crown and muzzle don't have to be even close to “perfect” to get excellent accuracy.

However, most shooters go right on believing that a perfect crown is needed and keep right on spending time and money for them for no good reason.  Sigh.
