My 686 has a miss fire about every 200 or 300 rounds.  I can tell when I pull the trigger and it hits the primer that it is a light strike.  The next round  ( and others ) are strong normal strikes. .  I can tell by looking at the primer that it was a light strike as the primer has a very light dent in it..

I use a Wolff reduced power spring..  All the primers show a good heavy strike .   What could be causing this ??

Primers ain’t all what they used to be but I think I would take a look at your spring or it’s adjustment. I am assuming you are shooting single action.

Is it really clean? As in the frame where the hammer face hits? Is it a problem with a factory spring? Tension screw turned all the way in?

If this is happening intermittently, I'd first verify that you're seating every primer fully bottomed in the primer pocket. Did you try firing the dud cartridges again? If the primer isn't fully seated the first strike will often push the primer deeper in the case and the second strike will usually fire the primer since it's now properly bottomed out.

Respectfully, I don't think is the primer.  I usually seat all my primers deep..   I can tell that when I pull the trigger that the hammer fall was light.  the strike before and after are all strong strikes !!

Sounds like every now and then you have more friction in your action. Like Rick mentioned, I would check and make sure it is clean inside. If a bit of grit or debris is floating around inside the action and gets between the hammer and the frame it could cause this.

You might try getting a set of hammer shims. They will make sure your hammer stays centered on the frame and help every bit of your reduced power spring go into the primer.

Sounds like you've done your homework on tuning up your 586, BUT did you check for a bore constriction choke in the part the barrel where it screws into the frame? Quite common.

Most of the time the problem is after market springs. I'd be very surprised to see the problem persist with the original spring.

Is this a newer 686. with a MIM hammer & a replaceable firing pin mounted in the frame? If so, your firing pin could be on the short side. Replacement extended firing pins for them are readily available. I have a 686 round here with a MIM hammer, and it appears to me that the hammer doesn't have the same length of travel that my elderly 4 inch all steel 686 did. I replaced the firing pin with an extended firing pin from Power Custom.

Likewise, used late 686 for competition and had misfires.  replaced frame mounted firing pin and no more problems.
