I plan lube some of my bullets and it's time to make some new lube. What is your favorite recipe for home made bullet lube? My plan lubed bullets are generally for rifle loads in the 1800 fps range.

Easy, cheap and effective, 4 parts by melted liquid volume of ATF to beeswax. Very good for high velocity loads.

For low velocity smokeless below 1700 fps or for BP cartridge substitute olive oil for the ATF.

Does it matter what grade of Olive oil?

There are several grades for sale at the grocery store.

I just use an inexpensive store brand light olive oil.

Thanks, Ed! I like easy, cheap, and effective. I have all the ingredients (all two!). I'll have to give it a try.

As well as several bought lubes, I've used beeswax and mutton fat (.44-40 smokeless, black & duplex), Black LithiBee (beeswax & Castrol LMM), and Faux Speed Green (beeswax & synthetic two-sroke). Most recently for full power .30-30 I am using what I call MX5, a blend of leftovers (LBT 42%, BAC 21%, LOM 16%, LSM 15%, ATF 6%). I'll be sorry when I run out of that one.

When we were just on the cusp of finding out about Alox, Col Harrison had already suggested lithium based multi-purpose grease for higher velocity CBs. Handling it was the problem - too sloppy for lube sizer or pan. My early .32 Special hunting loads were lubed by dry seating the bullet to leave all lube grooves exposed, applying grease with fingers, then completing seating and wiping off. They shot just fine, but the Javelina 50:50 Alox lube that came next was more convenient.

For grins, I decided to try homemade lube. Just threw some stuff together I already had. I started with paraffin and Crisco. This was a base which I added other ingredients. My lube didn’t impress me. However I can tell you 1/4 lb. Paraffin and one cup butter flavored Crisco makes a resizing lube similar to the tins of imperial. Works for me.

I have found a ratio of 2:1 parts beeswax to Kokum Butter works well.

With rifle in hand, I confidently go forth into the darkness.

One pound beeswax, one pound lanolin, two table spoons EV olive oil as a tackifier and half quart compounded steam cylinder oil, (Brennans) Adjust viscosity with beeswax or steam cylinder oil. Or olive oil.

I'm going to tell you denisons of the CBA forum a very few things about bullet lube and case lube. I stumblend into a very good case use that you would use very much like Imperial Wax. This accident lube is Cliganic Lip Balm.  The one I'm using is Coconut. I think the stuff may be made in France. Works very well and smell great!!  NOT CHAPSTICK, so if you use Chapstick and a case sticks in your sizer die don't blame me.

Not case lube but bullet lube.  There was a fellow MANY years on the Boolits forum that made his own soap lube. It's hands down the best all around lube that was ever created. I say all around because it works for rifle and handgun bullets and expecially extreme high velocity in rifle bullets.  One guy that also use to be on that forum, gear something, tried to beat that soap lube and couldn't do it.

Scott - search for "Felix Bullet Lube" and I think you'll find it. The formula is on this and other sites.

Then again, here it is anyway:

In reading Naramore's book, he recommended straight beeswax as sufficient, suggesting additives were simply to soften the wax for flowability in lubesizers. I might have to try that.

I'm also wondering if anyone has tried straight lanolin or a lanolin dominant mix. I've about 5 gallons of it in my basement (used to work for a sheep supply Co.) and hope to sub that for beeswax.

Ed's red would sometimes include anhydrous lanolin.  I've oft wondered about using in both bullet lubes and resizing lubes.

Lanolin is a good case Lube, however the viscocity changes greatly with temperature, can go from near solid when cold to nearly liquid when hot.I would say used neat it will be messy.

I have used Anhydrous Lanolin, now more commonly labelled as Wool Fat, as my case lube for a very long time.

In my view lanolin is absolutely THE BEST case lube. The secret is to apply a very small amount to the palm, i.e. suggestion of a slight smear, never a lump, rub hands together, then roll the cases 5 or 6 at a time between the hands. Refresh lanolin as necessary. Rubbing the palms together looks after the temperature issue.

I think the primary virtue of lanolin is that it sticks to the brass no matter what pressure it's under.

A friend was happily turning 7.62 brass into .22-250 with lanolin lube.

I bought a one pound jar about 1970 and between using it and giving it away I'd still be using it if I hadn't dropped the jar and broken it. My current jar is just a couple of ounces and I have hardly moved the level in it either.

A jar of lanolin is your lifetime case lube requirements looked after in one purchase.
