Hello: What is the best way to get a vintage mold ready for casting? I picked up a vintage 45-60 mold that has surface rust and some light pitting on the mold surfaces. Any help is appreciated. Thanks in advance. I cannot figure out how to upload photos of the mold. There does not seem to be an option for doing so.

Scrub mould with toothbrush, baking soda and water.

If that doesn't work try Bar Keepers Friend (sort of like Comet but better) and a toothbrush. I learned that trick here. Good luck, Squid Boy

...or Bon Ami if soap and water and a stiff toothbrush don't suffice.  Avoid Comet and Ajax.

I've read of a technique that involves removing the sprue plate, making a cast with alloy poured through a nut, dressing the cast with Flex or fine lapping compound, and turning the cast with a wrench to clean up the cavity.

Pits in a cavity may or may not be a problem.

We're all curious to know how it turns out...

I use "Soft Scrub"  on cast iron molds. It is another mild abrasive similar to Bar Keepers Friend or Bon Ami. Borrow someone else's toothbrush.

... don't worry at all about a few pits in the cavity ... and yes, BonAmi is so mild you can polish glass with it ...  such as your car's windshield ...

As usual i knew this was the place to get sage advice. I have some bon ami in stock. I will put it to use. Good idea on someone else's toothbrush! Still cannot load any photos of the mold. Thanks again everyone and happy holidays.

Sluggo,

type your message. On the bar over the text, about left of the middle is a square that looks like a picture. Left click on it and in a second a box will show, Push bourse. Go to your picture file and

and push open. The picture will appear.

Thanks: finally figured it out. My cell phone does not have the bar option you told me about. My laptop does. I must have a bargain, low budget phone!  Thanks again. here's the mold.

Nice looking mold you have there. I bet it will cast nicely the way it is provided some dings or burrs don't make the bullets hang up.
