I have found LeverRevolution powder to be very good in the. 30-30 with cast boolits. Has anyone had any experience with it in other calibers?

Works well in 32wcf and 45/70

I've used it with very good results with cast bullets in 30-30, 32 SPL, 308 CBC, 3.08W and 35 Rem. Also with very limited success in the 7.62x39.

Larry,

I happen to have an 8 lb jug of this stuff, and have found it very useful in the .30-30 thanks to the work you've done with it.

I was hoping to try some in my .308 Win Sav Mdl 11 or my .250 sav Mdl 16, but I don't know where to start safely. There just isn't much published data for this powder as I'm sure you know.  I use the Lyman 311041 in the .308 and the RCBS 25-100fn in the .250 Savage. Will you please give me some starting loads? I'm looking for velocity from 1500 to 1800 if that is feasible.

Thanks,

Ray

I have one of those Husqvarna's in 9.3x57. I think it is the Model 46. I have often wondered if the LeverRevolution  powder might be just the ticket for that caliber. Planned to try it but never got around to it, still have 6 boxes of factory stuff and just don't shoot it that much. Too many guns and projects.

Still looking for starting loads with LeverRevolution and .308 Winchester and .250 Savage.

My testing the .308W was with high velocity loads using 155 and 165 gr cast bullets (311466 & 30 XCB).  Rifle was a 14" twist Palma at 27.5" long.  If your 308W has a 12" twist you might try it.  With the 311041 I'd suggest starting at 33 gr and use a dacron filler.

No experience with the 250 Savage.

Truthfully LeveRevolution has a narrow range of use.  Excellent in smaller cases with heavier bullets.

Larry, Are fillers necessary with LeverRevolution? I am very afraid of ringing my bbl by using a filler. I also load on a Dillon old 450 and it doesn't lend itself to using fillers! Ray

Larry: I just noticed your above post from a few days ago  "Excellent in small cases with heavier bullets"  Have you worked with the 300 Blackout using Lererevolution? If so can enough powder be crammed in there to make it work or is this powder too slow for that application? Gp

No, fillers are not "necessary".  Fillers just make some reduced loads work better in some applications.  With the proper use of a filler there is no need to worry about ringing your barrel.  It's with the improper use (usually with a fast burning powder or with too little dacron) or if the filler (dacron) is tamped down into a wad that problems may arise.

I used the filler in the .308W to "trick" the LeveRevolution into performing as if in a smaller capacity case.  LeveRevolution burns efficiently only in narrow parameters.  Hodgdon developed another powder for use in the 308W.....SuperPerformance.  However, with heavier cast bullets in the 200+ gr weight LeveRevolution may perform efficiently in the 308W with or without a dacron filler.  I just haven't gotten around to testing such yet.

I PM'd a late (very late...my bad) response to your PM.

I found with the 30-30 and the 7.62x39 that it took a cast bullet of at least 170 gr for a 100% load density of LeveRevolution to burn efficiently.  Heavier cast bullets were better.  That being said I've no experience loading the 300 BO.  LeveRevolution may work under 200 - 220+ cast bullets....?  That's just a guess and remains to be seen.

LeveRevolution has a much different and distinct time/pressure curve (trace) than other powders listed in it's burning range. It usually maintains a high level of pressure over a much longer time span.  How that may effect the operation of a gas gun I can not say.  However, should you get LeveRevolution to burn efficiently gas port pressure may be too high.  Again just a guess.

Thank you Larry for the reply. I'm pretty happy with LilGun in the 300BO gas gun. 129 SP from a Noe mould. I have a Ruger Bolt and daughter has a single shot Handi in 300 BO. Just my curious nature. I might see what happens with a 200+ gr. bullet out of the Handi. They are pretty tough.  Just a WAG on my part so far but it may be too slow with not much case capacity after seating a heavy bullet. Gp

Has anybody tried Lever Revolution in the 7.62x39 mm with a heavy bullet say 200 + grain?

LeveRevolution Powder with the 30-180-FN at 197 gr in the 7.62x39

 I did a “workup test” using LeveRevolution powder. What I do is usually load 2 cartridges (sometimes just one) of increments from a start to a projected “max” load.  I used to call this “ladder testing for velocity and psi” but too many confused this with the “ladder test” commonly used for working up loads.  What I do in this initial psi/velocity testing does not consider accuracy at all.  My testing is concerned with velocity and psi.

 With LeveRevolution powder I worked up from 23.5 gr to 28.5 gr in 1 gr increments.  28.5 gr was at 105% load density with the RCBS bullet.  Velocities ran from 1554 fps to 1924 fps with psi’s from 20,100 to 36,300.  Knowing the RPM threshold was between 1700 fps and 1750 fps with the other powders I loaded 25, 26.5 and 27.5 gr looking for velocities from the mid 1600s to the mid 1800 fps.  The idea was to see how far the much slower burning LeveRevolution with its radically different time/pressure curve would push up the RPM Threshold.

 25 gr;

 Velocity; 1668 fps

 Psi(M43); 22,400

 Accuracy; 6” (7 shots)  and very poor.  There was soot blown back the expansion ring on the cases indicating poor breech sealing.

 26.5 gr;

Velocity; 1771 fps

 Psi(M43); 26,500

Accuracy; 2.4” (9 shots) no sooting on cases.  Accuracy definitely improved.

27.5 gr;

 Velocity; 1843 fps

 Psi(M43); 28,700

 Accuracy; 2.65” (9 shots) definitely pushed the RPM Threshold up as RPM is 139,700.  28.7 gr is worth a try but alas I am out of the RCBS 30-180-FN bullets………note on the target the 1st and 2nd shots were right at the bottom of the target I was using.  To make sure I didn’t lose any shots off target I moved the scope elevation up 3 moa.  Those 1st two shots would have been in the group.

 Above is a snippet from a larger test about that bullet in the 7.62x39 I did some years back for juinor1942.
