Just acquired a Henry in the 327 Fed chambering. Twist is 1-16 and groove diameter is .312". Currently using 100 Gr RNFP PB bullets. Have tried multiple powders and charges with less than optimal results. Loading is currently in the 1400-1600 FPS range with this bullet.

Any experience from others that they would like to share for recommended loads. Shooting with Skinner receiver sight system and fiber optic front sight. Having a difficult time getting groups smaller than 4" @ 50 yds and less than 10" @ 100 yds.

Thanks.

Bob

Bob, about 1400 is the fastest I ever had success with in a plain base bullet. My first suggestion is to try the Lyman 3118 (311008) 32/20 bullet. It normally works at 1400 f/s well. Next is to use a slow powder that is easy to ignite like 2400 or 4227. Hopefully that will get you a start. The 1-16 twist will let you shoot bullets up to 150 grains, if round nose. Ric

I think Lee makes a sorta copy of the old LYMAN #311316? It's a RNFP 113gr Gas Check.

Might be worth the $22.00 MIDWAY charges for a 2cav.

Hmmmm.  I want one!   (Henry in .327 Fed)

My experience with the Marlin in .357 mag is that the long heavy bullets really work well.

I have the 314008 from NOE in a 5 cavity mould.  2 x GC, 2 x PB, 1 x GCHP.  GREAT bullet.  Just slightly bigger in girth than the Lyman original.

Cheers from New Zealand

I like the .357 rifle rounds loaded with the SAECO #354 180gr FPGC over a heavy charge of 2400. It's a bit hot in the NM BlackHawk, the only Revolver I've ever tried it in. Knock a TURKEY off the stand out of a 6 1/2" bbl, but only knock over a RAM. I would not care to fire it out of a 4" barreled S&W 19.

All this talk of the .327 FEDERAL makes me miss my MARLIN 1894CL in .32-20WCF.

I have had my best luck in my carbine with cast shooting 10 grains of 2400 and a NOE 315118 or Lyman 311316. I got right at 2 inches at 50 yards and 3 to 3.5 at 75. They run 1625 to 1650. The absolute best load I have shot in it is a Hornady 100 XTP and 14 grains of Little Gun. It shot 7 out of 10 into an inch at 75 yards with the other 3 opening it up to 2.5.

I have not fooled with the .327, but have quite a bit with the .32 S&W Long, .32 H&R Magnum and .32-20 in both rifles and revolvers, as has Ric.  I'm not sure what limitations you might have on overall cartridge length to feed in the Henry, but in my .32-20 rifle I have best results with the Accurate 31-105T, 31-114D and 31-134D, all with a compressed case full of IMR4198, about 13-14 grains.  You cannot get enough 4198 into a .327 case to get into any trouble pressure-wise, I would fill the case so that the charge is compressed about 1/8" by the base of the seated bullet in exactly the same manner in which you would load black powder.  With IMR4227 I would load a nominal case full, to the base of the bullet, but without compressing the powder.
