I hate it when this happens!

I hadn't shot my Finn M39 since the military match the Thursday before the CBA National Tournament last year, so decided I better get it out and blow out the cobwebs.  I got a scope mount that replaces the rear barrel sight and put a 6x scope on it. I loaded up three extra rounds of the first load, 20 grains of Reloader 7 with the Lyman 314299 cast of linotype, weighing 196 grains ready to load.  This was the load I shot last year.  The three extra sighter/foulers were with bullets I had rejected for minor visible flaws.  From a clean barrel, they grouped nicely at the top of the diamond.  I cranked the scope down some and then fired the 10-shot group of the same load, but with visually good bullets.  (OK, one from another load snuck in there.)  Argh!

Does it look like the bullets outside of your group are yawing a little?

Could be.  The bullet carried well to 200 yards last year and was not very wind sensitive.  I think a lot of CBs show a little yawing.

I know the pain. have shot visibly flawed bullets at the sighter bull and usually they hit the x. Once at Springfield Oregaon that happened at 200 yards. Only x for me that day.

In March this year during warmup I had 4 shots make a nice .375" group. None of my 5 shot groups were even remotely close to that but I did pull it all together for a 10 shot screamer, hunter rifle. Followed by score with nothing worth writing about.

well Glenn, looks like you should stick to the imperfect bullets. I do the same thing and use them for sighters and so called " imperfect cases" and they shoot well. sometimes my mind will not let me try them for record. ???

It feels like that happens to me all the time. I load up some rounds of a new load and try a few informally at a good shooting spot near my house. The group looks great! Then I make the drive out to the range to really ring the new load out and it looks like I'm shooting a shotgun!

When shooting a postal match, I almost always put a better group on the slighter than I do on the 4 record targets. The deck is stacked against us.

Murphy is alive and well and operating at a range near you!

Meeting Murphy is usually my fault.
In my hands it usually involves a LARGE amount of pistol ammo.
New keg of powder should be OK. Load up a bunch.
Failure to check electronic micrometer with standard. Rounds too long!
"Remembering" load data. I was so sure!
Wrong alloy in the pot.

Sometimes the reason is obscure then it must be gremlins!

He has visited me many times, next time I will send him your way.

I shot a Sil. match Sat, using a 357max H&R scoped, I thought I brought 3 boxes of ammo, and sitting on the bench was a box of 357max, with 20 rounds in the box, I thought it was mine, when I went to shoot it was not there, went a little crazier than usual looking for the ammo, my BIL insisted I didn't bring it, got home from the match looked all over, no ammo, I was sure someone picked it up......now I have to apologize..found the ammo on the steps to the basement, there was two boxes, I only put one in the bag

getting old ain't for sissies

Is it possible that the scope/mount is not as solid as you thought?

Rich,

I had questions about the mount when I first put it on last summer as I was getting vertical stringing.  I checked it all out and it seemed good and tight, so I added a couple target paper shims between the barrel and the forend tip and it settled right down.  The gun is still in the military stock with the military bedding, I just removed the hand guard.

The same day I shot the above target I shot several more loads. 16 grs. of 2400 shot a 2.24" group, 20 grs. of AA LT-30 shot a 2.99" group, 17 grs. of VV N110 shot a 1.55" group, and 14 grains of Blue Dot shot a 1.78" group.  The last 2 are shown below.  I will shoot them at 200 and pick the winner.  All loads were in the 1500s for velocity.

Groups are so random with the few shots we make, it is to be expected.

Glenn thanks for reminding me about putting a shim between the barrel and forend tip. My barrel is free floated now so I'll give it a try to see if it helps.

Please remember that Springfield barrels have square threads, not "V" threads, so like original Winchester 54's and 70's almost always shoot better with some up pressure.

Pat, the vertical stringing really had me baffled because in full military dress it shot very well.  Back when I got it I could put the open sight on "6" and hit the ram sighter plate (just a rectangle) at 500 meters regularly with a hot CB load (the 314299 at 2100 fps).  Since the hand guard is removed now it doesn't have that "stabilizing" that the front band gave it.
