What are the highest black powder rifle cartridge pressures you are aware of, used for our favorite black powder rifle cartridges?
- 1874, 45-70-405 - black powder, 19,000lbs
- 1878, 45-70-405 - black powder, 28,000lbs
- 1891, 30-40 Krag - 55gr black powder, 230gr, 37,360lbs
- 1899, 45-70-500 - Dupont .45cal. smokeless,16,550lbs
- 1899, 45-70-500 - King's Semi-Smokeless, 18,780lbs
- 1899, 45-70-500 - King's Smokeless, 19,245lbs
I am going to edit this as I go....the above is not a loaded question!
With some corrected actions for pressure testing in 1891 for the .30 cal. experimental cartridge, here is a chart showing different pressures for different loads.
If I understand the testing correctly, this is where the military settled for a 28gr charge of Wetteren smokeless powder @ 42,050cup for the standard for comparing all other future tests with smokeless powders.
