What are the highest black powder rifle cartridge pressures you are aware of, used for our favorite black powder rifle cartridges?

  • 1874, 45-70-405 - black powder, 19,000lbs
  • 1878, 45-70-405 - black powder, 28,000lbs
  • 1891, 30-40 Krag - 55gr black powder, 230gr, 37,360lbs
  • 1899, 45-70-500 - Dupont .45cal. smokeless,16,550lbs
  • 1899, 45-70-500 - King's Semi-Smokeless, 18,780lbs
  • 1899, 45-70-500 - King's Smokeless, 19,245lbs

I am going to edit this as I go....the above is not a loaded question!

With some corrected actions for pressure testing in 1891 for the .30 cal. experimental cartridge, here is a chart showing different pressures for different loads.

If I understand the testing correctly, this is where the military settled for a 28gr charge of Wetteren smokeless powder @ 42,050cup for the standard for comparing all other future tests with smokeless powders.

I believe 22,000 CUP for the 500 grain load for the Model 1881 ball for the  Springfield rifle.

Interesting would be some test results from 1899 using smokeless powders...I got sidetracked again...lol
