Ok,

I had to get a NOE Thumper for the 35 Whelen.  313gr cast.  So now I have an Issue, where to start the loading.

Rifle is a Brno VZ-24. 1/12 twist.  I'm not looking for a Rino load just a shooting load.  I have gone through our Archives and found an ED Harris load of 13gr of Red Dot. That will be a good start.

So if some one can direct me to some load data on .35 Whelen rifle loads for heavy bullets That would be grand!

Thanks in advance.

I have the CBE 360-300, actual weight in my alloy (BHN about 14) is 310grs. It was significantly undersized, which normally would have been highly undesireable. But convenient for me, as I was planning to powder coat it! I size the driving bands .360 and the nose .351, using the NOE bushing-based sizer.

But I have only a «Rhino-load», sorry. 47grs of Vihtavouri N150, 2050fps. This is my most accurate cast bullet load. The photo is from sighting in a couple of weeks ago, a 5-shot group at 100m (the ragged hole on top had three bullets through it).

Also included is a photo from my penetration/expansion test in water jugs. I was happy with the results.

Now, if only the moose will cooperate this autumn, I might try it for it’s intended purpose!

I have two loads for Lyman 358009: 16 grains of A2400 that is barely supersonic, but accurate, and 40 grains of H4895 that is all my shoulder will stand. FWIW

Thanks,

Ric and Spindrift.  A place to start...I too have the 358009 so more fun with heavy lead. I don't have any of the V140 but what a great load.

Thanks again,

Jon

Ric do you think that A2400 load would work okay for a 220 grain bullet? Also can you tell me how A2400 compares to IMR2400.  Thanks in advance.

Never heard of IMR 2400 powder. My reference is to Alliant 2400 formerly made by Hercules. 16 grains may be a little light for 220 grains. I have a custom Mountain Molds's 200 grain that I use for a light plinker and it shoots much better with 18 grains. At these light loads, A2400 can be position sensitive so try to keep the powder in the same position. HTH, Ric

I'm laughing at my mistake because I've been working with IMR powders. Yes, of course, I meant Alliant 2400.  Since I posted that I tried 21.5 grains of my 2400 with a 220 grain bullet and it's doing about 1700 fps.  I may up it a little more.  The accurazy was quite good. I'm using iron sights with the rear being a Lyman peep sight.  Yes I did raise the muzzle to position the powder again the flash hole. All went well.
