I’m looking hard at loading heavier bullets for my 9’s. the I like the recoil impulse of the coated 147 truncated cone bullets I have been shooting. This has got me looking at 160’s . Data on Hodgdon’s web site indicates 800 tp 850 fps top speeds while staying in standard pressure ranges. Have any of you had any experience with this sort of thing and if so what bullets have you tried?

I've tried many bullet designs and the best and most accurate I have found has been the obsolete Lyman #358212, a 150 grain .38 Special roundnose. I use 3 grs. Bullseye powder for a muzzle velocity of about 875. I size the ww alloy bullet to .358". Works perfectly in a Sig P226, a Beretta 92F, and a Walther P4.

I've tried heavier bullets without success. This load has mild recoil; whether that is the same as "recoil impulse", I don't know.

This is an apples & orange comparison to what you're using but I have 9mm Ruger PC which has a 6.5” barrel that I load using the NOE 155FP, sized .357, COAL 1.090 and 2.8g of N320 @ 875fps. 9.59 SD. It gives me thumb print size groups at 10 yards.  Got all Buck Rogers and put a Sig red dot scope, a collapsing stock and a suppressor on it.  Went to the trouble of setting up a Lee 4 stage progressive press (Which actually works great!  Be sure you lube the turret ball track) and all that rigamarole.  Sad to say it never got put into use.  I can't get past bolt guns.  Thanks, Bill Cook.

I used a Lyman 358311 158 RN years back with good results. Powder charge was 3.0 bullseye or 3.5 unique, both worked OK. Also used some 158 gr HP SWC's but I don't recall there functioning well or not.

I think I may have settled on the Lee six cavity 158 grain flat round nosed bullet. They cast at .358” from sweetened wheel weights snd size to .355” with no issues. Hodgdon’s load data website lists 4.8 grains of no.7 as making about 840 feet per second at 34,000 psi. I’m using 4.6. Accuracy is very good in my duty sized guns and the Kimber Pro-Carry 4”. They all kick like a 38 special standard load. The brass drops at my feet from the Kimber. I had some fiddling to do to get the over all length and crimp just right and some brass will bulge at the bullets base if the case webb is too thick. Winchester, Remington and Federal seem fine. Blazer, Cascade, and KYK not so much.
