Bullet Molds - eBay

This morning, after pulling email and checking the weather, I came to the forum to see if any new posts had been made. Seeing the posts whereby members were seeking 33 caliber molds, I decided to scan eBay to see what molds were available there.

I was quite surprised to see that 4,700 entries were up for sale under "bullet molds" on that venue. While they have tried to stratify the entries into classes, the sellers entering the molds for sale generally don't have a clue what they have or how to list it.

Some molds listed as "new" display lead streaks under the sprue plate, indicating at least a few casts. Molds listed as "vintage" generally are abused molds, not old molds. Molds sold in "lots" are generally overpriced. It's abundantly clear that a lot of estate sales have transpired and granddads molds are on the block.

The general appearance and abuse of the products is disheartening to say the least and it is evident that the vast majority of the products up for sale have been seriously abused, rendering them incapable of producing a usable product. Lots of molds are mislabeled as to their intended caliber or use but anyone who has been casting for decades will immediately recognize any shining stars listed within the items for sale.

Unfortunately, one has to scan a rather long list of items up for sale to discover the jewels contained within. There are a few of them in the listings. If one is seeking a particular mold, it is probably worthwhile to peruse the list to identify one which may be placed back in service to produce a quality bullet.

I concluded that most sellers simply do NOT know the product they are attempting to sell. There are a lot of new molds for sale there, mostly Lee molds which are overpriced, but there are some new molds by other makers too. There are a host of listings showing incomplete molds missing sprue plates and such.

Suffice it to say the takeaway is:

1. It seems to be there are a lot of estate sales going on trying to liquidate dad's casting gear.

2. Most of the offered molds are unserviceable.

3. There ARE some real gems that appear on the venue.

4. It's worth a perusal to see what is available on there for molds no longer produced

Have a great day!

Thanks for the reminder about ebay. Just to satisfy my curiosity I went there and the first thing I saw was an Ideal 308284 plain based mold with handles for fiddy bucks with handles shipping included. Looked okay so now I wait and see.

Rather than buy junk, get a new NOE or Accurate mould and be happy.  For my 33 Wins I have Ideal 338320 solid and HP plus a 3389.  I have a roller project that will be a 33 WCF pretty soon that I hope will like the 3389.  I know the deer will not like it..  I used to buy some good moulds on ebay but no longer bother.

A lot of the information that a couple of you guys shared, about buying molds on Ebay, is exactly what I have found on Ebay the last few years. In years past, I purchased some nice molds, but not much anymore. It's hard to deal with some-one, like Aron said, that don't have an idea about what they are selling, That is also my findings when buying any kind of reloading equipment on Ebay.

One thing that I don't have to worry about when I'm gone is, my sons definitely won't run out and start selling my lifetime collection of reloading tools. It will stay with my sons and then my Grandson and Grand- daughter.

I recently searched ebay for a RCBS 40-300-CSA and much to my surprise I found exactly one, with handles and the name of the seller lead me to believe they were an estate sale reseller. I messaged the seller explaining the bullet moulds sold on ebay were,"A cat in a bag", and made an offer. The seller quickly accepted and I soon received an excellent mould and handles that cast excellent bullets.

what 33 molds are you looking for? I have quite a few plainbase I use in my 33-47 schuetzen rifles  and a few gascheck designs.

That got me thinking " where will my molds end up". My son does not want them. My nephews show little interest. None of my shooting buddies cast. ???

When buying molds on-line I want a high quality picture of the cavities. I also want the right of return and refund for any reason.

Having been bitten purchasing used molds, it must be a smoking good deal to overcome my doubts.

I know what you mean. I told my wife to put it all in a box and head up to the auctioneer. I would have had her do the same with the firearms at Cabela's but they would not know a nice gun if you shoved it down their throats now. Those days are done. I guess the guns will end up at auction too. I won't care.

My accumulation of stuff I  think if I die suddenly, it will be easy to price the factory guns.

What's going to be sold for pennies Is the custom guns ,my custom and antique reloading tools and custom and collectable molds.Someone is going to get a deal.
