Since I started doing gunsmithing full time last October I've had a few interesting repairs.

First look at what I found inside a TC Black Diamond inline .50 caliber.

Next let me say I did everything possible to save the barrel shroud on this Dan Wesson, but in the end had to cut, heat and beat to get it off the barrel. What's really odd is the small hole that runs all the way through the bullets, 6 total. The owner swears he did not attempt to try and fix it before brining it to me.

Found out the hard way not to use a wooden dowel to drive a slug for a measurement. The wood is a bad idea anyway and it was in sections, but I used one that was too tight. My "I swear I did not try to fix it" managed to ruin a 32-20 (barrel stamped 32 Winchester) S&W M&P circa 1912. The gun had been ridden hard and put away wet but that was no excuse to kill it. The GS I sent it too managed to talk me out of a new barrel and said it was going to cost $150 to send it back to me on top of the $50 to send it to him. Insult to injury. Someone later told me the grips would have fetched at least $200 but I put little faith in selling expensive antique parts as a one off.

David, what was that chunk of all-thread supposed to do?  Knock the breech plug out?

Since the breech plug is threaded, it was an effort in futility. One end was stuck in the breech plug and the other was pounded to hell and back.

Wow.  Two amazing jobs in less than a year.  How entertaining!

I might understand using a length of all-thread to drive out a breech plug.  Maybe bubba told him, "It's easy.  That's how I did mine."

But I can't imagine sticking a cylinder full of jacketed projectiles in the barrel.  I'd pop that barrel in the mill and section it to reveal the hole drilled through the projectiles.

Looks like they managed to do a pretty good pound cast with that threaded rod. Amazing. And I thought it was bad having to explain to people that firearms are made of steel and steel rusts, therefore, keeping your gun oiled is a good way to prevent said rust.

Did you pull the shroud to see if the barrel was bulged?  I'm guessing that with jacketed bullets it was.
