IS THIS CHEMICALLY ENHANCED MARKSMANSHIP?

I haven't shot this well offhand since I was 12 years old in 1962 and working on my NRA Distinguished Marksmanship award. The thought of the little Squirrel target for the 25 yard Offhand Muzzleloading Postal Match has been giving me pause.

My club range, Lasalle Sportsmen in Niagara Falls, NY,  opens late at noon on Sundays and I awakened early with painful neck muscle spasm from a recent injury. The emergency room Doctor had prescribed 5 mg Cyclobenzaprine, as needed for whiplash pain and spasm. The neck was so painful I almost didn't practice.  My mind said, “Take the pill, stupid.” I hate medications, and avoid them like the plague.  I took one at about 10:45, ate and made the range at 12:15. Then, I setup and started shooting  copies of the squirrel target offhand.

I fired 3 five shot targets before I walked downrange to check them and put up new targets. I did my best, the neck was somewhat better from the medication and the spasm had stopped on the drive to the club. Lately, 2 - 2.5” offhand groups at 25 yards has been what is ending up on paper. This was a total shock. I was looking for more holes as I approached the target stand.

Here is what I met: http://s30.photobucket.com/user/rhymeswithwhat/media/P9080027_zpsfa7dcb1c.jpg.html>

Being a muscle relaxer it may have helped you. More relaxed = better aim.

Yesterday must have been a good day for offhand. I shot a 94-3X in the Highpower match at Duncan, Oklahoma Sunday.

It IS good shooting!  I shot the revolver leg of the Sept. PM today and after reading Gary's confession, realized I should have got a Rx for cyclobenzaprine too:D

Good shootin'.

I'd like to see a skunk target.

10 points if you hit the 'clean kill' spot and -100 points for elsewhere!

Very nice, it's amazing how well one can shoot when we stop thinking about how well we want to shoot. I think the term that is in vogue these days within various athletic and sporting circle is “performance enhanced". In this case “Chill Pill” provides a better description of the results and has a much nicer ring to it.

Back in the day they used to set up a keg of beer for the shooting matches. They had a term called “shooters nose” for the lively color some of the competitors used to put on their beak. Darn nice shooting Gary. When you passed your hand slowly across your field of view did it leave purple streaks behind?

I didn't have any color trails.  I just wanted to shoot Sunday and ran out of endurance and tolerance for the whiplash symptoms.

Stepping up to the line and concentrating on the sight picture didn't seem different at all. When I am psyched up about a shot, I do a breathing exercise after I say the word “calm” then exhale half a breath and settle into lowering the rifle to the trigger squeeze. I do that for match shots and shots on game, but rarely in practice like I did on Sunday. I knew I had to try harder with the little target, so I went into Zen Mode.

If it was prescribed by your physician you should insist that it is medically necessary, that is your story and you should stick toit! 8-)

Now that's the best damned idea I've heard in a long time and might think about incorporating it into the match.

Drinking beer +shooting a match is called Schutzen Match

In the 80s I used to go to Archer City to shoot in hunters pistol matches. When the drinking over ruled saftey I left and never went back.

Would the progression go something like this? No Beers = Shooting Match Two Beers = Shootin Match Four Beers = Schutzen Match

Maybe someday I will be able to stand up on my hind legs and shoot nice tights clusters at 200yds.
