Got a message this morning from one of my shooting pals that said Marlin firearms was closing it's doors. Supposedly the info has been verified. But ya'll know how the internet works.
Anybody else heard anything about this?

Well it isn't like they've been overly active the last couple years abyway !

Here is a link that “somewhat” explains this:

That link is just a copy of the article that was posted on the Outdoor Life Gunshots forum in March of 2010.

The Marlin plant in North Haven, CT has been closed for some time, after Remington bought them. I drive past it on occasion. If the line is being discontinued by Remington, that would be more news.

It seems to me that the NRA daily update discussed this some time ago--memory is kinda hazy, but I think that it was something like this b.s. about George Soros buying up all the ammo companies, or gun companies, etc. I don't know how/why this stuff gets started.

Can anybody help me with this? I've been casting for a long time, and a term has somehow crept in that I haven't noticed until I joined the Assn. and this forum. People occasionally talk about “beagleing” a mould. What do they mean, exactly? Thanks for any answers. I hope I'm not being too Snoopy by asking.

There is a caster who went by the handle “Beagle". He came up with the idea of putting small strips of aluminum duct tape on the contact faces of the mold blocks to get a mold to drop larger bullets. It works.

What does that have to do with the Marlin plant closing?

not a thing

Thanks for the non-Marlin reply to my question about “beagleing"; L just bought some of foil tape and am planning on laying a small strip inside the mould cavities just forward of the first driving band to decrease the diameter enough to make it a bore rider. I hope, anyway.

Never heard of anyone putting tape inside the cavities. Let me know how that works.

Well, I have “beagled” (or should I now call it billglazed) the inside of the 6mm mould that was supposed to be a bore rider. The forward cylindrical portion before working on it miked at .244". It would not slide into the muzzle past the bullet ogive. So, cutting some of the 1/4” wide foiling tape, I applied it to the cylindrical forward portion of the mould. The copper tape had pre-applied adhesive. Keeping the tape on the cylindrical section was the important part, and I smoothed it into the cavity with a Q-tip. (Medical type, not pool room.) After casting several bullets, I found that they slid just right into the bore of the 40XB, as they should. One side of the cavity had the tape start to come loose, and I believe it was because of improper trimming by me. I used an X-Acto knife, with a #11 blade; it's going to require technique to cut the tape off flush with the edge of the mould block, and at a slight angle to keep the cut edge below the parting line of the block. So, the bullet dimensions went from .244” to .236", which is just where I want it to be. I'm happy enough with the procedure, that I intend to use it on a couple of .30 cal. moulds, after I evaluate it over a long-term period. Sorry for the long posting; I don't even know if anyone might be interested, but I've never heard of this procedure being performed before.

Thank you for the update, I never heard about such an application for beagling; it's worth a standalone thread, easier to find for reference and participation ("billglazing, or diameter reduction through beagling"?).

Actually, from what I was told by a local gunsmith/gunshop owner in that Marlins closing will only be temporary. They are re-tooling due to lost business/bad reputation for poor quality in their products. I was told they they will be back “online” with the former quality once the retooling is complete.
If someone else had of done to me what I did to myself . . . I'd have killed him. Humility is an asset. Heh - heh.

While I truely hope so , I take your local shop owner to be overly optimistic .
This retooling as he puts it has been going on now for about two years .
