My range closed by USAF, NAFTA and Homeland Security

Bullets on the USAF tarmac behind the berm at my 100 yard  range fired by irresponsible pistol  members at my club, Lasalle Sportsman Club, Niagara Falls, NY,  has led to the closing of my range until the range is modified to newer standards.

First pistols were banned and then members ignoring the rule managed to get over 200 more pistol bullets onto the runway about 300 hundred yards behind the berm. We have a small group that made metal frames to hold the clubs standard 2x2x6 foot wood target frames above the ground instead of down into the PVC tubes in the ground that go 1.5  feet deep into the ground to hold target frames. This high mounting of target frames made target tops extra high and the pistol shooters were bringing their target holders up to 10 yards and less with high targets. The standard PVC target frame tube holders are at 25, 50, 75 and 100 yards. The irresponsible shooters laughed at me for asking them to stop because their bullets were going over the berm when firing close at high targets. After the range was closed to pistols, the rule was ignored.

My club literally has the Stealth Planes, Black Helicopters, large troop carrying, cargo and fuel carrying planes right behind the club.

There is a work day at the club Saturday the 15th and 16th to continue work on the wood beam baffle system over the range. I am barely healthy enough to drive and will only hunt with my grandsons that help me. I am going to the work day and have invited the boys to pick me up if I fall.

My chronograph and accuracy tests for 7.62X39 subsonic loads with the new heavy Lee bullet are on hold indefinitely. I apologize to members here waiting for the post to be submitted,  but the range has been closed for over a month and I wanted to let you know why.

Sad but true: stray rounds have been an issue at a number of my clubs:

Florida: rounds over the berm impacting a popular dive spot when   “get off the X” means bending your knees while engaging a target   three feet away.

Arkansas: rounds skipping off the ground and over the berm   because targets were too close.

Ohio: rounds over the berm because tall targets were shot at   short distances.

Georgia: both of the last two.

Never mind the “steel too close” or “gaps in stacked tires” or "right-angle corners behind target stand” hazards for others on the range...

I'm sure the members didn't purposefully intend to be careless but, in each case, I got “Not my bullets!” responses.

Education and discipline, please: our hobbies are potentially dangerous.

The NRA has plans available for a “no blue sky” range set up. Our club installed one a couple of years ago and it appears to be working. It is as ugly as hell and cost a bundle. We do get to keep our club and that is what matters.  I'm sorry that some arrogant selfish people at your facility had to mess things up for all of you. Hind sight is 20/20 and some people would look good with a boot sending them out of your club.

It never ceases to amaze me how many members of our sport have continued to shoot and hunt without killing somebody or themselves.  Twice I have almost had my head blown off (literally) by another hunter (one was my Uncle who took the hat off my head from the muzzle blast of his 06).  I think every gun club should have the viewing of gun shot wounds on people as mandatory just to remind those who refuse to think just how deadly our sport can be.  I have had grown men tell me that : “It's just a 22rf there is no real danger."  I do not think that safety can be stressed enough.  Do it to the max, and then add an additional dose.

Onondonga, I am surprised that the USAF has allowed your club range to continue to exist with virtually no safety zone between them and the range.  I am also amazed that the membership allows the guilty shooters to remain..  Idiots like that are a blight upon our sport and if they won't straighten up immediately then they should be forced to leave.

If we do not police ourselves there are those waiting eagerly in the wings to make it impossible for us to practice our sport.  Think about it the next time you see some ass acting in such a way as to besmirch his namesake.  Brodie

I've had a small pistol range behind my house since 1990. I've worked on guns, tested guns, tested ammo, practiced with LEO's, and even taught a few LEO's how to shoot here. We got a new sheriff back in Jan 2009. He really doesn't care much for people shooting or practicing. Earlier this year I had a visit from a deputy and was told not to shoot anymore behind my house. It seems I'm too close to the road now, and even though I've used my back yard as a range for over twenty years, they say they'll issue citations and possibly arrest me if I continue to shoot. I talked to the supervising officer at the SO and he said we don't have any bylaws or standards as to what constitutes a pistol range in Dodge county, and whether I was in violation of the law would be up to the officer. I sent him a copy of this law. https://docs.google.com/viewer?a=v&q=cache:hdJ9xqDV2QcJ:www.gssa.com/Ranges/Range%2520Protection%2520Bill.doc+&hl=en&gl=us&pid=bl&srcid=ADGEEShv-rk0EGVHwaHN-C3B0A3oE0FREHJ0QAGALUVa6MVqz00O4ezONp2Tm0flfP13JpFAeeEY0o577lBKTsKWWmDl4dYmofZecsXdn7w5QtSVSyW9DOVo5lWcoB0gHDjlcfDFh3&sig=AHIEtbT56XhhThD43omntHAOFvFgF2i3Cg He didn't seem to care what the law is. His boss lost his bid for re-election. I'm hoping the new sheriff will actually read the new laws so this doesn't happen again.

Oh the big shocker to me was when the deputy asked me why I was shooting my 45. I told him I was practicing. He asked, “Why". My mind actually went blank when he said it. I did manage to stutter so I can hit what I'm shooting at, but he still didn't get it. I never thought I'd be asked why you practice by anybody, especially a LEO.

Sorry for the hijack. When I see anything having to do with shooting ranges I end up venting.

Things like this happen at all ranges/clubs from time to time. Usually a few who aren't going to do what they are told on 'their range' Sad but true.

When things like this start up it's bets to police your self before someone else gets involved. Hate to say it but if a few get canned/ thrown out it can serve as a reminder that no BS is tolerated when it comes to safety, especially with the neighbors.

I hope it can be resolved and that you can get your range back.

Guys:

It is a rickety old range that has been around longer than the Air Force Base. I am happy the improvements are coming but wish it wasn't closed now. http://s30.beta.photobucket.com/user/rhymeswithwhat/media/stealth.mp4.html>http://s30.beta.photobucket.com/user/rhymeswithwhat/media/stealth.mp4.html and: http://s30.beta.photobucket.com/user/rhymeswithwhat/media/BAngels.mp4.html>http://s30.beta.photobucket.com/user/rhymeswithwhat/media/BAngels.mp4.html We close the range during air shows at the the 914th Airlift Wing . It's the same story it seems not matter where you go. We have a really nice range about six miles away from my house that I was in on starting probably 20 yrs ago now.

200 yds Hp with pull targets, 100 yrd -covered fireing lin falling plate pistol and a 50rd covered firing line. Built from the ground up starting with a few guys and a dream.

But, I only use the range during the week. Not on weekends!!! Even being a private range with a locked gate for members only, it's down right dangerous some times. Can't believe the stupidity. It's only a matter of time.

At my range we had a pistol round (.45 ACP) get loose & lodge in picture window frame of a house several hundred yards behind the range. The shooter was identified & asked to apologize the the home owner & pay for repairs. He responded by saying, “The Rod & Gun Club has insurance, let them pay for it.” His membership was promptly terminated and he was banned from coming back on the premises. There are a lot of people buying guns these days which is, of course, their right. Many who are making these purchases have never held a gun in their hand in their life. With that knowledge on board, one should enroll/engage in at least a hunters safety course or seek out firearms safety training. But instead we have know it all “Cowboys” in our midst. It seems that untrained individuals with pistols tend to “pull down” on their target(s) instead of “up” resulting in rounds getting loose via pre-mature firing. Pulling down on a target with a handgun is “movie stuff” & should be avoided. I too was guilty of that years ago and was instructed differently.

We are lucky here in Arizona, we passed a law several years ago stating that an established shooting facility could not be forced to close due to encroaching population.  Thanks to the AZGFD they got this put through the state government and we had sent our worthless former governor (Janet Napolitano) off to serve in Obamas Cabinet (the best thing he has ever done) and was signed into law by Governor Brewer.

Pigslayer, my congratulations to the membership of your club; they did what they should and what a lot more groups need to do. Brodie

I like that.

Sitting here, approaching the end of my work life, I'm thinking about where I'm going to land.  Arkansas?  Tennessee?  Texas?

I've lived in each of them.  Maybe.

Illinois?  Ohio?  New York?

I've lived in each of them, too.  No!

Arizona?  Hmm...

Our was closed for 2 yeras due the high target frame use and a 45 auto went over the behind the backstop and broke the mayor's brother's sliding glass door. We now have a no blue sky overhead and ground baffle system per NRA and you would be really surprised to see how many rounds they soak up. When I'm on RSO duty I DO NOT ALLOW pistols to be fired w/out a rest, cause mostly the target frames get destroyed as we only have sockets fro 50 & 100 yd points-Swifty
