800 is the outer limits for my casting, how hot do you want to go?

Anyway, try this:

PID appears to be your only option if you have no temp control at all.

"Uncle Russ” here on the board makes a good one, FWIW. They are accurate to 2 degrees F. and last forever, unlike your SAECO, that only made it 60 years. Ric

The temp controller I build to order is basically guaranteed forever. As RiY says, is accurate, repeatable and does not decrease melt time. They are a plug in unit. Controller plugs into wall outlet, pot plugs into controller. Insert supplied temperature probe, set temperature and in about twenty minutes a twenty pound LEE pot is ready to cast. Price is $199.00 plus freight, and controls up to a 10 amp/2400watt load directly. If your pot/element is larger call, we can modify to control anything.

I am working on a new unit that will hopefully sell for $99.00 plus freight or half price but it is only in the beta phase now. Need more guinea pigs to help test. The other side of the “AFFORDABLE” model is the guarantee will only be 30 days from ship date. Chinese parts you know, once you let the smoke out, the magic disappears! The first unit is all american made components. I guarantee it like Leupold or Vortex scopes, if “YOU” mess it up we fix for cost +, if “IT” messes up I fix for free. Any more questions?

Please don't ask Ric to see his, it is a very early model and ugly! He was in a rush to get it!

Over 40 happy casters across the U.S. after my ads in “The Fouling Shot” news letter.

Well, I would not call it “ugly", but more like “post Art-Deco industrial". Never had a single issue since new, and has always worked perfectly. Ric

Yeah get a harbor freight infrared thermal gun for $20. Then switch the power on and off. Charlie

If you are doing that. Who casts the bullets? :wow:

The melt doesn't change temperature that fast, think about it.

If you have the coin to spare, then a PID with a lifetime gurantee would be the way to go . . . if you have the coin. The $99.00 PID is a very fair deal considering labor involved. But, as much as I hate to say it, don't discount those Chinese PID Temp controllers. They work & work well. I built mine complete with a switched bypass for about $50.00  The SSR (Relay) I used is a 25A.

Mine came out really nice, was easy to build and I thought about building & selling them like Russ but I wouldn't be able to do any better than Russ in cost  considering the labor/time involved in fabrication.

If someone else had of done to me what I did to myself . . . I'd have killed him. Humility is an asset. Heh - heh.

After screwing around with Nichrome quite a bit 12 amps is about all she needs. That's usually for a rating of 1450F temperature wise.
