Hello, everyone.  I have had a Oehler 35P for a few years now...almost ashamed to admit..what with work & things, I have never taken it out and used it!  Now most of my shooting is with cast bullets..either gas check or plain-base..with a 1/32 to 1/16” fibre wad under bullet base.  I am planning on using this thing this summer..Just had a thought..should I make up a baffle to protect screens from wads & blast?  What do you guys use?  How large an opening to shoot thru?  Thanks alot!

What I did after I embedded a few GC's in the front reader, along with a bunch of lube splattered on it, was to make a thin medal sheet that slips over and covers that front reader. Works great! All I do now is just wipe the lube off it once a year. Still get a little lube on the “eyes” but that's easily cleaned off with a Q-tip and window cleaner.

I just ordered a chrony.
Having seen them with substantial bullet holes in them, I'm going to make a BULLET deflector to mount it to. Flat plate on the bottom with a 4” or so angle iron to deflect the bullet (at a 45d angle).

TRK,

Ever put a 600 gr..50/90 bullet thru a reader? :)  Luckily the angle was such that it only destroyed one.

But I think anything that would be heavy enuf to deflect a bullet would be cumbersome and also knock your setup over and possibly doing more damage.

Of course there was that time you put a .25-hornet through an Ohler sky screen bracket too... ;)

But anyway, I beat up my Ohler screens pretty good with .45-100 loads using grease cookies and heavy wads. After a while, I ordered new brackets to hold the screens from Ohler and in 2 minutes I replaces the old chipped and tattered ones with the new ones.

But Pete, I saved the one with the .25 hornet hole - just for old time's sake :) :)

Brent,

Yeah. But.... Recall the time I put, what was it, a .45/70?/90?/100? slug, thru your skyscreens? Told you I shouldn't have done it offhand. :)

When I become famous, or infamous that .25 Hornet hole will be worth big bucks!! I'll even autograph it for you.

Anyhow. You gonna be coming up to Steamboat Rock any this Summer? Or does the lure of 1000 yd. shooting seem like more fun?

A laser bore sighter is handy for getting the bore situated so that you don't hit the crony.  Just put a piece of cardboard or paper on the front of the sky screen unit for the bore sighter red dot image.

Its also a good idea to remove the bore sighter before you shoot as a bullet will make a mess of it and it might fatten up your bore a bit.

Oh, I'll be in Steamboat for sure. I have already been to Phoenix for 4 days of 1000 yds. Didn't do very well though.

BTW, I got one of those new MVA Win B5 scopes. Pretty darn nice they are. I'll show it off up there.

Brent,

I've read about those MVA scopes. Will look forward to looking at it.

I bought my chrony in '86 and bent a piece of 1/4” Lexan at a 90 deg angle, drilled it and bolted it to hole in the front. It lasted 8 years like that but, because it was bent, it eventually cracked and broke. I never replaced it and made some holes in the face plate with BP. I don't use it much anymore but, if I replace it, I'll use a piece a aluminum angle and bolt the Lexan to that.

I don't use the screen covers, It's always worked great if the sun angle doesen't hit the photo eyes.

I have had two Chronys over the past 25 years. I have been lucky enough to never put a bullet through either one but after a couple of GCs cut holes in the plastic reader plate, I made a shield out of a 1/4” thick piece of plexiglass mounted it in a grove cut in a 3"X5"X3/4” piece o wood. It works great to protect the reader from GCs and lube.

Well, I don't have a Chrony. I have a Competition ProChrono Digital. http://www.midwayusa.com/product/852429/competition-electronics-prochrono-digital-chronograph>http://www.midwayusa.com/product/852429/competition-electronics-prochrono-digital-chronograph Because plugging it into my laptop at the range appealed to me. Less fiddle, more bench time. First time I fired over it without my shop-made shield, you guessed it, face dent. :X I made a plexy shield and used some Velcro strip from a sewing supply to put it on with. So now only a direct hit would damage it. Bob at the range knows I like to fiddle with my ammo and lets me set up near the shack. I have a very old and heavy duty tripod I put it on.

It doesn't take anything elaborate, just a square big enough for the face, and some sticky-backed Velcro strip. In fact, the more compact, the better. You do not want a “sail” in the face of the muzzle blast, Capish? I had some aluminum angle I used so the Velcro is on the top of my unit. And it is less baloney than the factory version.
