First of I am wondering is anyone can point me in the direction of where I can find some 22 cal cast bullets.. I have found one site and that is Moyers in PA... They have 2 types....Ok now on to the main question.. Will the 55 grain with gas check work in my 22-250 with the 1 in 9 twist? Which powder do you think I should try? And what about over all length? I have heard it is not a good idea to have the bullet touching the lands...Any advice will be appreciated..John:dude:

I shoot Lymans 225415 out of my 223 Model 70 Winchester with a 1/9 twist. As long as I keep the velocity under 1600 fps accuracy is good.

I use 3.5 grains of Red Dot.

rd. bullshop, yes that is it. there usta be more info. he has talked of a subsistance living and his time is dedicated according to the time of year. he has posted on cast boolets and that is where i first saw his info. you may look there or just send him an email. he has spoke of 22 bullets and a son has offered 22 bullets made from 22rf cases. i have not ordered from him but hear good things. he make a product he calls bullplate. it is an oil that is applied to the spruplate on moulds and keeps lead from streaking and collecting. i have used it as it is supplied with new NOE moulds. it works and is good. let us know what you find out if you corrospond. good luck. m

Hello, 2frogs. My .22's are 14” twist..but I do shoot an Ideal 245495 100gr.g.c. out of a 71/2” twist Winchester, with no leading problems.

I have found that 55 grain cast bullets shoot as well in one in nine twists as in one in fourteen inch twists and usually not at all in one in sixteen inch twists (some 22 Hornets and 218 Bees).

It is easier to shoot longer bullets (which can be made to shoot in nine inch twists) more accurately than 55 grain bullets. But molds for longer bullets are scarce and I expect bullets are even more difficult to find than molds.

Out of curiosity, is some manufacturer now putting nine inch twists on 22-250 or is yours custom?

I shoot a 60 grain LBT cast bullet from my Savage 10/223 using 7 grains of Unique. It also has the 1 in 9” twist. One thing I found out is that the bullets need to be nearly perfect to get reliable accuracy. Any imperfection usually results in a flier. I am casting hot with WW +2% tin to get good fillout and using LBT “blue” lube. This combination works very well and is not much louder than an ordinary 22 long rifle.

I don't know anything about that particular LBT bullet, but my experience with a variety of 22 caliber bullets from 38 to 85 grains (including three LBT bullets) shot in twists from 8 to 14 has been exactly the opposite. I have never found that minor or even quite visible flaws caused a measurable increase in average group size. See my article in the July/Aug. 2011 Fouling Shot with pictures of badly wrinkled bullets that shot five shot groups under an inch at 100 yards. Of course gross flaws will affect accuracy but they have to be really ugly.

I have also found that even bases that are as much as two degrees off from perpendicular with the long axis have only minor effect on accuracy. See article with pictures in September/October 2011 Fouling Shot.

John, There is a Biblical precedent for not shooting wrinkled bullets. When David was preparing to take on Goliath he “chose him five smooth stones out of the brook” I Samuel ch17 v 40 KJV
