Perhaps it is time to introduce myself. My name is Dale Lock, I live near Petersburg, IL, and grew up (?) near Farmington, IL. I farmed with my parents until all the money was gone in 1986. Then I got a job the only place that would take me, the United States Department of Agriculture, Farmers Home Administration (FmHA). We made loans to low income rural residents and farmers with cash flow problems, which was almost everybody back then. Then we tried to collect that money back. Lots of sad stories there.
In 1990, we moved to Peterburg, IL, when I became the FmHA Hearing Officer stationed in Illinois. I held hearings in some 20 states since this is a Federal position. In 1996, I became a Hearing Officer for the new National Appeals Division. I am not an attorney, all I have is a farm management degree (BS) from the University of Illinois. Originally, I was hired for my “practical” experience, and because of my reputation for doing what was right. Needless to say, this became a big liability after a while, and I retired July 31, 2011.
I grew up (physically if not mentally) on the family farm with a Sears .22 bolt-action made by Marlin. I had a neighbor, Leon Suydam who had a house full of guns and he introduced me to the world of reloading, casting, handguns, high powered rifles and I have been a ruined man every since. Leon lives in Arizona now and shoots BP rifle Silhouette out there.
My competition experience consists of a few local silhouette competitions where I did no better than third. When I moved to Quincy, IL, in 1987, I was a range officer for three or four Masters Tournaments on the shotgun range, my least favorite firearm.
Since moving to Petersburg, I have had little contact with other shooters outside of my family. I did fix the rifles for the American Legion posts in Petersburg, Greenview, and Mason City, for while, but worked myself out of a job.
I own about 35 firearms, 18 or 19 centerfire rifles, a dozen or so handguns, and the rest are rimfires, and shotguns. I reload for about 20 calibers, and have almost 20 molds for pistol and rifles. I mostly shoot the .30-06's, and the .223's, plus my seven .45's, a .44, a .357, and a 9mm. My latest acquisition is a Remington VTR in .308.
I have shot cast bullets mostly in pistols, until about five years ago, when I became interested in cast rifle bullets. I have been a CBA member since at least 2007. I work with computers a lot, especially video and still pictures for church, genealogy, and family. I use Sketchup to “build” models in 3D. I like to model trains, planes, and farm buildings in wood, paper and plastic. I do workworking, metal working, electrical work, plumbing, painting and all the other “honey do” jobs “she who must be obeyed", gives me.
I have three children, two of whom live in Alexandria, VA near Ed Harris in Annandale. We are going out there on the 14th to see our new granddaughter.
I have a lot of training as a writer, my weakest subject in school. I do a lot of experimenting with guns and loads and would like to write some articles for TFS. Unfortunately, I suffer from three things, procrastination, bad memory and uh, I don't remember the other one. Oh, poor organizational skills.
Anyway, I thought I better introduce myself, because for all you guys know, I could be Sarah Brady. Having worked for the Federal Government for 25 years, lets just say I have a very low opinion of government in general, and the Federal Government in particular. Anyone that thinks any government program is “free", and a good deal, should check himself into a government run mental hospital.
I have been reading Ed Harris's articles since the 70's, which is why I have .45 ACP revolvers, Lee liquid lube, the Lee 155 SP mold for the 7.62x39, a 200 grain .357 mold, Bullseye, Red Dot, reduced .30-06 loads, and Ed's Red. I have not succumbed to buying a .32 yet though. I have kept his articles for reference for almost 40 years.
I think Ed's article are a treasure that should be passed down to new shooters. I have no motives other than that.
