All of my life I have transported my rifles in soft cases or GI blankets. I am in the market for a hard case. What do you guys use and what are they made out of. Price seems to vary between $50 and $400. Give my an education. Thanks, Ric
Rifle hard cases

Ric: In my opinion, it depends on what you're going to do with the case. If you're just going to transport the gun(s) back and forth to the range, and you're the only one who will handle them, I'd get the cheapest one(s) I could find. IF, HOWEVER, you're going to ship by air or some other means where baggage handlers etc. are tossing it around, I'd go with a good, high quality - probably aluminum - case. If you're going on a guided hunt, where the guide's hired hands are going to be loading/unloading your gear, again, I'd go with a high quality case. Do you get the impression this is maybe experience speaking? Wes

Ric,
A recent issue of Outdoor Life has a review of several cases from those really high dollar jobs to something more reasonably priced. Sorry, I do not have the magazine in front of me. I think I read it in a barber shop. :kilroy:
Good shooting! RT

Several years ago I flew to the Nationals in Kansas. My flight changed planes in Minneapolis. As I sat in the seat awaiting take off, I spotted my Ziegel Engineering alum case going up the ramp to the cargo bay. To my horror, I watched it fall off and drop about 10 feet to the ground where it was promply picked up and tossed to the person loading the cargo bay. Needless to say, this did nothing for my confidence. I picked up the rifle and drove to the range on Friday expecting the worst. I took off the scope covers, did not even adjust the scope, It shot exactly where it had when I left Seattle. The best case is real cheap insurance!

traveling back and forth with the army we used pelican cases. they might be expensive but worth every dime. pretty much indestructible, waterproof, and pelican backs them against failure. ive seen these cases live through some rough times and the weapons inside come out like they were just pulled out of a safe.

I like the Plano cases for travelling back and forth to the range. The cases from $30 - $150 with metal latches, riveted construction, have all failed at one time or another on me. The plano plastic latches have held up well.
Airline or other travel: Pelican is a no-brainer. I've had them hold up to US airlines, Egyptian customs, Kuwait border guards.....they didn't make any headway with it. Still have the case.
I checked out the Ziegel Engineering case. It's the only hard case offered by Dillon and it looks like it will do the job. Good latches, welded construction, and at $110, that's a steal! I'll be ordering one for myself!

I buy doskil cases at Walmart, about $25.00. Then I wrap the latches with duct tape and cover the outside of the case with a piece of cardboard that I get from the refrigerator store. Take it to Fed ex, insure it and never have had a problem. Figure in the cost of the case and shipping when you sell the case.

Ric, for BR target rifles with BIG scopes I like the Plano Airglide 1301 case, it has never failed me in many years of use. I found them on amazon at a good price that includes delivery, which is important as it is a very large case. Walmart some times has them in the stores that still carry firearms and hunting equipment.

I assume the case came in a sturdy cardboard container suitable for shipping a rifle. Is that correct?

cityboy, bought them at a gunshop in PA years ago and they were not in a box. Check with the Amazon seller, I'd think they would ship in a cardboard box!
I add more foam to the cases as necessary for extra protection, and put my cleaning rod in with one my rifles when I go to the CBA matchs.

One thing to consider is that from the house to the range a rifle shaped case is fine. If I bought one for air travel, I would get one that has a less obvious rifle look to it. A square case may be a rifle, but it may also be a fishing rod, or engineering tool. Just a thought.

Travel tip; when flying with a hard case make sure your locks are TSA compatible locks, they have a master key and won't have to find you or cut your locks to open and search. Also, I put luggage straps around the case just for extra insurance against popping open. You can get the nylon straps with buckle at wally world. With all the horror stories I'd like to add I've never had a problem flying with guns, either long or handguns. Just follow the rules. The airline people in Kansas City posted a guard on my gun case there 'til I picked it up, just to make sure nobody messed with it. Nice people.

I had a nice rifle and scope fall off the motorcycle at great speed, and wrote: “An Argument For Hard Cases” in UPDATES in the book. The case is a $10 cheapo case, but it did the job. No damage.

I pick up the cheap ones as I find them. The price of cheap keeps going up though:). If I buy a rifle through the mail, I try to get them to ship in a hard case. If I sell, I offer it shipped in a hard case. For local use, the cheap ones seem just fine, just don't use them for storage.
Keep your plowshare and your sword. Know how and when to use them.
