HOWDY:D I have an idea that I need advise with, before I proceed with it. Up here in the GWN we have a lot of humidity and cold weather. The 5 groove barrel on my rifle does not like to much lube but under the right conditions is a shooter. Presently Iam seating my G/C with my Lyman and lubing with Liquid Alox, cut 50/50 with paint thinner. This combination works with the load I use in cold weather. I do have a “little” leading after about 25 rds. When the weather warms up, Liquid Alox does not work as good as 50/50 beeswax in my gun and in my case the Barometer does make a difference. OK. My idea is to block the two bottom holes in the lube die and only use the top grease groove for lube. Being it is the first to enter the bore it would provide enough lube and be used up by the time the bullet leaves down range. Has anyone ever lubed “only” the front groove?? THANKS:dude:

Are you pushing your bullets in the sizer die upside down?? My RCBS and Lyman lubers are “smear lubers” and the pressure is always on as the bullet is being sized and lubed. Upside down is the only way I would think you could do it and then the nose would be really crudded up.
Might want to try just the bottom lube groove.

HOWDY billwnr:D If the upper groove were viable as the only groove used for lube, I would J/B Weld the outside of the Lyman Lubsizer Die and only leave the two top holes exposed. Lube could not enter the bottom holes when the bullet is sized and the G/C seated. Only top groove would receive lube. In my case, accuracy is a number of little ideas that add up to good groups. I will be trying the bottom groove only but just curious if anyone has done the top groove only. THANKS for the reply :D

As soon as the base of the bullet passes by the lube holes at top of die the lube will enter the lube grooves on bullet as the lubresizer is a pressure unit similar to a grease gun. There is always a pit of pressure in the well unless handle is backed off to relieve pressure . Hope this helps some .

Thanks for the input.
As bill mentioned I would have to put the bullet in upsidedown which would crud up the nose. I follow what you are saying about pressure and the bottom groove having to pass the first hole. Taking the pressure off the lube would be the only way this would work but I would still get a little lube in the bottom groove. :(
I guess if it was a good idea someone would have figured it out already.
I'll stay with Liquid Alox for the winter and use the bottom groove for spring and fall with both grooves in the summer.
BTW I saw a ad for custom sized lube dies over to Tacoma WA.
I “E” mailed the fellow but the address didn't work.
Who can refit these dies and supply a oversize plunger to go with the opened up die?
Thanks for the good advise:D

here's a workable idea. Only lube the space above the gascheck. Some shooters already work this minimal bit of lube. This is doable with the way you want.

HOWDY BILLWNR:D You are right. I did up three different lots of bullets I put a square of teflon on the base of the bullet and seat the G/C over the Teflon Tape. The sizer rolled the tape into the bottom grove around the G/C. I put more tape on and rolled into both grooves. I then lubed the grooves with 50/50 alox and pealed the tape and lube out of the bottom groove. Next I lubed around the G/C. The bullets with the top groove lubed shot about the same as the ones with the G/C lubed. Your way works best.:dude: Iam trying these idea's so I'll be ready for the opening match at Puyallup. I plan to show up with three different batches of bullets. You/all shoot there all the time and know what works. Us foreigners have to be prepared:D THANKS

Try [email protected] for that machinist in Tacoma. If that doesn't work, get back to me. I can get hold of him by phone.

CB,
I use a decent solid lube on my bullets and ahve no trouble unless I am in southern Florida, I am not even sure if the bullets have there. I use a Star sizer for most bullets, the other I use Xlox and run the bullets thru a Lee Sizer.
All of my lubes have worked at my home in Que, as well as my home is Appalachia, where the current temp is -18c. My bullets work, even when it is so cold that the dog won't go out and he is from Labrador.

Wes HOWDY WES:D Thanks for the reply. I sent a e mail and it went thru. I haven't had a response yet but it's to soon to tell. Presently I have and O/S die that works but I would like to explore my options.

Where are the folks using liquid Alox getting it? Only place I've seen it is in Lee's catalog; even the folks around here that stock the usual Lee stuff, don't have the Alox. Also, do all you folks using liquid Alox simply tumble-lube the bullets as suggested by Lee? Thanks for any help here.
In theory, there's no difference between theory and practice. In practice, there is. My fate is not entirely in Gods hands, if I have a weapon in mine.
