I picked up a #45 Lyman off ebay in great shape with exception of the old grungy lube on it .

Whats the best way besides getting it steam cleaned to get all the grunge off ?

I was able to get it broke down even with the dry caked lube and got the die out of it so am ready to start cleaning it up. I would like to save the finish on it if possable too .

Any ideas ??

How about that oily mineral spirits paint thinner (for oil base) to break it down? Shouldn't be too harsh on the finish.  Use a lot of it for cleaning guns, it removes lube (although acetone is faster but harsher).  I use a lot of spray on Rem Oil from Walmart to clean up sizing dies, that works too.

Hope you get it cleaned up,

Hey now , I have some mineral spirits for mixing with boiled linseed oil for stock finish . I'll try some and a old tooth brush . I have one of those heat guns too for the parts that arent painted . I forgot about it until the hair dryer mentioned ! Thanks !:D

Another way is to use a large old pan. Boiling water will melt the lube and remove it from the lube/sizer.

Personally, I use a heat gun. You DO have to pay attention and don't overheat the lube/sizer - just hot enough to melt all of the lube off and out...

Try not to burn yourself...

I have done the boiling routine to the extent that the paint came off my old Lachmiller. I agree with the hairdryer routine.. It seems to work the best for the old beeswax / alox gunk

Gentle heating to melt the gunk. Wipe off while still warm. Wash with mineral spirits and blow with compressed air if you want. Hair drier or heat gun. I am not going to suggest propane torch.

Well the save the paint was a non issue in some places as the lube gunge leeched under paint lifting it . Saved about 90 percent of finish but what the heck ! The function is real good and doesnt look like much wear but left dirty after use for long period .

A can of spray paint fixes a lot of woes.. I stripped mine and found a spray bomb at the local hardware that was very close in color to the original. Works good, looks good and besides, I dont think the bullets care either way as long as they make it out the end of the barrel.

I boiled the old Lyman 45 I picked up a few years back. Worked and then I was ready to reload it with some fresh lube.

It could probably use a fresh paint job but It's not on the “Must do” list yet.

Wire the lubesizer over the top middle of a 5gal bucket. Hang a light bulb over the top of the sizer with the sizing die out and come back in an hour. Paper towel clean and your done. The last one I purchased had some really ugly black lube in it and all over the outside. The above method cleaned it up like new including the pale green RCBS paint. I used nothing but the light bulb and heavy paper towel. Easy, safe, and fairly quick.

What about putting it on a cookie sheet (with a paper towel between the cookie sheet and luber. Set the oven to 200 degrees and come back in an hour.

Not only will it clean the luber off but it will heat treat the first 20 bullets you run thru it.

Truthfully it does clean the luber off.

I used WD40 and a rag and it cleaned up good . The wax/lube had undermined lifting some of paint off and maybe at some point I will try and repaint it .

200 degrees isn't hot enough to put a real odor in the air. Yes, I get away with it. 300 degrees or so might cause marital problems.
