HOWDY:D After 30 years my old Lyman lube sizer has stripped the threads on the gland nut. Being as I have about 30 different sizer dies and I have read that the new RCBS is a better sizer, will the dies crossover?? I plan to set my old sizer with a cal. I use all the time and make a fitting to hold the die in place. I haven't decided on the new sizer yet but if the dies are interchangeable I'll probably go with the RCBS. Although the old one lasted a good long time, it appears that the new Lyman is not the same quality as the old. What say you?:D :dude:
LUBE SIZER CROSSOVER

They are interchangable do it all the time.
Thanks Nimrod:D I was cruising the catalogs and noticed that the RCBS dies are about $10 more than the Lyman. Now I'll do a search to find out which sizer is best. The local CBA in Canada is having a marathon these next four days. Got to get in some shooting before the cold weather sets in.:D Anyway Thanks Again. Iam off to change out another die. :dude:

Yep the Lyman is cheaper than RCBS seems to me they work equally well dies that is, the lubricator though the RCBS is better much stronger.

You guys need to look at the dies that a fellow that is a member of the CBA makes, he goes by the handle of Lathesmith and makes a really good die, I have several for my star. He also makes dies for RCBS and Lyman, I think he gets about 35.00 each.

HOWDY:D Thanks for the input. I have to tell you/all. I phoned Lyman and asked is they had a Gland nut kit for my 450. The lady said no problem she has sent me a replacement nut. Free of Charge. Iam impressed. My 450 is 30 years old and no questions asked. Thanks again :D

Sounds like Lyman has got you out of the frying pan on this one, but just FYI, it is my understanding that Lyman sizing dies will work in RCBS sizers (I don't have an RCBS sizer so I've never tried) but I can assure you that RCBS dies will NOT work (fit) properly in a Lyman 450. Some day one of my shooting buddies will need a .311 die for his RCBS sizer, and I'll be able to earn his undying gratitude. Until then, it'll just roll around in my sizer die drawer.

I have two new 30 cal RCBS dies and neither will fit in my 450.

My Lyman 450 accepts RCBS .226, .243 and .244 dies.
These dies are at least 10 years old. What is the difference in these? What am I doing wrong that they fit?

My Lyman 450 will accept RCBS don't have many mostly Lyman dies and all are old don't know if there is a difference between old and new but will check and measure a few. I always buy Lyman if possible cause they are cheaper.

Hello, Canadian Bacon, The RCBS dies will not seal in the older Lyman 45. Lyman dies have a rounded groove for the set screw on this sizer.

I have two Lymans. One is orange with a roundstock handle the other is a gray one with a flatstock handle. The Orange one is a way better unit.
I have three brands of dies and they all fit fine.
If the internal threads are O.K. you only need a new nut and you are back up and running.
Maybe one of our members has made a thread restorer for fixing the internal threads. You could save your old press.

All my Lyman sizer dies measure 0.700” diam. top to bottom, with a couple of grooves near the top (the top groove being for the rubber O-ring seal).
The .311 RCBS die I mentioned in my previous post also measures 0.700” except at the top, just below the O-ring, it steps out to 0.720” diam. for about a tenth of an inch. That step keeps the die from going down far enough to allow the sizing die retaining nut threads to engage the sizer body.
If I had a lathe, I suppose I could have turned the step off the RCBS die and used it in my Lyman 450, but I figured buying a Lyman die was cheaper than buying a lathe.
Having a lathe in my shop would be nice sometimes, though......
