Hi,

This is my first post here (or anywhere else for that matter).  I'm looking for prior experience with the 32 Winchester Special in a Winchester Model 55.  I need to find a suitable mould.  I intend to load to approx. 1500 fps. for target shooting only.   Any experience with mould selection will be appreciated.

Thank you

John

Mr. President, welcome aboard! I'm interested in this gun/cartridge too as my brotherinlaw has a nice old Winchester he'll loan me and I acquired a used Ranch Dog Outdoors TLC323-170-RF. That's as far as I've got so far, but I understand it's fairly easy to load good ammo for the .32. Look up Ranch Dog's web site and search this forum for .32 WS, let us know what you come up with. The RD molds are popular for levergun shooters, priced right too.

Hey JFK,

I have loaded cast for many years for the 32 special carbine. It is an easy one to load for as you have described your needs. I want to get anonther Rifle, but aolder model 94 - 26” rifle this time for the NRA lever Silhouette matches. This rifle set up with a tang sight would be great for up to 200 meeter accuracy. A fun game.

I only have shot the RCBS mould made for the 32 Special. It is a 170 gr gas check design and feeds flawlessly and is a good place to start. If you have another mould ...fine too.  A regular RCBS die set with the addition of a Lyman “M” die is all I have used and it does well. I have used both SR-4759 for the loads running in the teens (FPS) and Reloader 7 for a little more speed. Both work. I think this cardridge is flexable and will shoot well with most any reasonable load and bullet.

just my 2 cents.

I hope this helps,

Michael Rix

I haven't fooled with the .32 Winchester Special in many years, but the late Frank Marshall, Jr. said it would perform similarly with any bullet 140-180 grain flatnosed and powder charge listed for the .32-40 Winchester. He also said that you could use .30-30 cast bullet data for the same weight bullet and not get into any trouble.

As for Franks .30-30 loads, his favorite small game plinkers were 5-6 grs. of Bullseye or 7-8 grs. of Unique, PB or Herco with any 110-150 grain plainbase, and GC plinker loads with 150-180-grain gaschecked bullets were 14-16 grs. of #2400 or 4759, or 16-18 grs. of 4227, 20-22 grs. of 4198 or RL-7 or 25-28 grs. of 4895 pulldown from GI .30-'06 ammo.

As applied to the Winchester 94 these are all fine, but Frank was quick to point out not to try to extrapolate .30-30 data back to .32-40s, particularly in weak actions such as Ballards.

Thank you all,

I appreciate the information. Mr. Harris, I was stymied in that I could only find reference to one readily available mould (RCBS) which may be prefectly fine, but another choice or two would be nice.   I have some experience with the 30 WCF and the Lee 170 and the Lee Soup Can bullet. I would like to find a mould similar to the Soup Can for the 32 Special.

RMRIX - mine has an interesting Lyman tang peep sight. Within the sight stem is the peep sight with a fold out peep (small hole) that folds forward and reveils a large peep hole. I would also like to use this rifle in Lever Gun Matches.

Thanks

John

Saeco #632 is the traditional 165-gr. flatnose, tapered, plainbase bullet for the .32-40 and is readily available from their traditional and cowboy bullet list. Cast from 1:25 alloy, use 16-18 grs. of 4227 with Remington 2-1/2 large pistol primers and Darr lube.

Unfortunately, my TLC323-170-RF will not be in inventory until the first of the year. I'm in the process of reopening my on-line business and planning to maintain all my bullet designs in inventory. Bull Shop is going to offer my bullets as a finished product.

I design my bullets with max loads in mind so hence the “C” in the prefix, meaning “Gas Checked". I shoot every bullet I've designed and the 32WS and TLC323 hold my record for fist shot to big game down. I want to say that in sixteen rounds I had the load chosen, the rifle sighted in (Marlin 336RC), and a nice boar hog on the ground.

I don't shoot my RC much but it doesn't mean it isn't one of my favorites. It just doesn't take much work! I shoot 30.6-grains of H322 for 2245 FPS at 42.1KPSI. I dip lube with liquid alox and size with a Lee sizer. Absolutely no leading because the bullet fits the throat, leade, and step.

If you are interested, you can look at my 32 Win Spl stuff here: http://www.ranchdogmolds.com/Ranch_Dog_Molds/Marlin%20Leverguns/Gas%20Checked%20Bullets/TLC323-170-RF/index.html>Ranch Dog's TLC323-170-RF for the 32 Win Spl.

These links will change when I open my new store.

Thanks Michael,

The first of the year is fine with me, I'm in no hurry. Nice hog, we have an overabundance here too. My rifle is a winchester, I've not made a chamber cast, would you expect your bullet to be proper for the winchester chamber?

Thanks

John

John,

From the reports I have gotten back, yes. Marlin has some odd ball barrels floating around from the early years but Winchesters seems to be consistant with the SAAMI spec.

I received my Ranch Dog mold a few weeks ago. It is a beautiful piece of work. I haven't been able to try it out yet, work gets in the way but hope to over Christmas. I'll take the 32 Special out near Mason, Tx. and try it out then.

Lyman 321297 is a mold I've used for the Winchester. The 184 gr. bullet works well turning steel out to 300 yards. I like the round so well that I chambered it in the Ruger No#1 and the true potential of the round can be exploited.
