Dug out the 1955 vintage Bob Apex / Monty Kennedy 350 Apex (now a 358 Norma) and took it out to the range this morning. I just picked a starting load from one of the load books and went shooting. Here are the first three shots. Shot the rest of the ammo up, but none were as good as this. I may have to shoot this one more often.

NICE SHOOTING!

I saw an article in Field and Stream a'while back that focused on a fur trapper in the wilds of Alaska. His main shooter was a 358 Norma magnum named BoneCrusher.

If they shoot like that I see why people would bet their life on it.

I was really surprised, as this is only the second time I've shot it with cast bullets in the 8 years I've owned it. It has a pencil thin barrel and heated up very quick even with light loads.

I got 40 factory and 150 reloads with the rifle. The reloads were all about 95% max loads, 250 grain bullets at 2750 f/s. More recoil than I want from an 8 pound rifle at the bench!

But I figure that everybody needs one stopping rifle if a rouge tiger comes walking into my yard.

Vassal;  Having seen the size of some of those “Good Ole Boys” back there I'd recoommend hard cast or at least solids.

Or you could have your 91/30 rebored/chambered to a .416 wildcat necked up 7.62x54r. There's a guy that does 'em fairly cheap.

WHAT!! I repeat WHAT!!!

What a fabulous IDEA. Who does stuff like that, and how much?  I would use a finnish m39 and go to 338 or 356.   I guess I'd have to fiddle with dies though. but that would be TERRIFIC!!

Wait a minute,,, this isn't my thread:offtopic::hijack::#:

That's a very nice group, especially with iron sights. I've read many a article about how the .35s are the best all arounder. Mostly about the versatility angle. You could cook up a load with light handgun bullets or go with the tiger loads you have. A closeup and details about that rifle would be nice. Someone put a lot of work into it.

On the Russian wildcats, I think I first read about them over on boolits. I'll backtrack and see where I saw that, but I know just a few months ago I saw a website for a guy doing rebores, maybe in Oregon?  Maybe someone here remembers the name? I was thinking about a widcat Russian myself. EDIT; found it    http://www.35caliber.com>www.35caliber.com

Tim,

The rifle was made for an AF Captain, flew P38's in WWII, who retired to this area. Bought the rifle from the guy who got all of his guns from the estate when he died in '99. The metal case still has the airline stickers for its transport to Kodiak, AK, in 1956.

It is a thin barrel with some engraving on the top. The springfield trigger/magazine assembly has been hinged and release is inside the bow. A real '50's “California style” rifle.

In early 1969, in the highlands of central Vietnam, The enemy had an poorly set up ambush for us. A young man tried to shoot me in the head with this rifle from a range of less than 30 yards, he missed. I dumped a 20 round magazine into him and we broke the ambush with great loss of life to the other side.

When I got the rifle home I took it to the range and fired a shot at a sheet of newspaper at 25 yards. I didn't hit it and I couldn't get the empty out without a rod and hammer, niether could the previous owner.

The chamber was so deeply pitted the only thing I could think of to clean it up was 308 Norma Mag. The rifle looks like it was stored in a rice paddy for a while. The stock is some sort of homemade tropical wood and the bore looks like a cave.

If you think these light rifles are a beast to shoot with 7.62X54R try shooting a few 190 grain factory 308 Norma Mags in it.

Do you think anyone has done this in 35 Whelan? I have a Yugo 38 I would like to get converted. She would make a neat brush gun.
