Small Game Load for 30-06 using 311-093-1R or TL314-90-SWC

I have a Mauser, has anyone ever heard of this use of a 30-06?

I used to shoot squirrel head shots with 32 S&W long.  This was a quick clean kill compared to some 22LR shots.

Somewhere on the web I saw an article on using 32 S&W long loads in 30-06 for Rabbits and Squirrels.

Should I cast soft lead bullets?  I have the TL314-90-SWC mold I use for my sisters 32 H&R mag.

I get free powder and primers so I was thinking, why not take a few small game loads when I go to the club for practice at the 300 yard range with regular 30-06 loads.  It is over 400 acres and hunting is allowed.  Maybe after practice, I could bag a few squirrels and grill dinner at the club.

I could cast in pure lead or use clip on WW alloy.

No harder than wheelweights. Your .32 H&R Mag. bullet is OK, but for the '06 size to .311. Only light film of Lee Liquid Alox is needed. Keep velocity subsonic with the light bullets, try 4 grains of Bullseye or 5 of Unique or 231. Don't go any lighter, but OK to increase the charge up to 6 grains or so if it doesn't lead and shoots well.

Ed,       Is there a reason, other than preference, to keep the light bullets sub-sonic?

In my experience, given the short bearing length of the pistol bullets and their long jump into the rifling, they shoot wild when over-driven.  Best are bullets such as the NEI #82 having a bore riding forepart large enough to engage the rifling. It shoots well to 1400 f.p.s.  Short bodied SWC pistol bullets and the 94-gr. Meister Cowboy bullets shoot wild with similar loads.

THANKS ED.

Did you modify the NEI bullet to 98grn like in this post?  Did you modify the mold or did you have NEI make it that way.

I could go with a different mold I have the Lee 311-093-1R too. Or get a NEI.

I just thought of something.

How about using a 50 grain soft cast .224 bullet in a 30 caliber sabot?  Shot sub sonic.

I already have the mold for a bullet I use hard cast cg in a 223 single shot.

Trust in ED :dude: If you have the Lee 311-0932R I would try that first.  Lyman #3110080 or #3118 would also work well, as would the RCBS 32-90CM cowboy bullets.

NEI can shorten any of their moulds to remove bands, etc.  I did have that done on the one shown, but later had Erik Ohlen shave the residual heel from the half grease groove off the base to make a conventional 88-grain flat-base for the .32 ACP.

For a rifle small game bullet I would order the #82 in a 115-grain plainbase version with two grease grooves and 3 driving bands, very similar to #311008 or #3118, except that the NEI version is really dimensioned for .32 revolvers with .315 bands and .303 bore riding nose, .195 meplat.

I have no experience in loading sabot rounds with cast bullets.  I don't think the long pointy bullet you have would stabilize subsonic.

Brain Fart.  I actually knew that and forgot.  That is why they call the sabot load an Expediter.   It shoots a extremely fast speeds.

Another option is size “0” bucksoht swirrled in liquid alox. I have used them in .30-30 and .30-40 with 3 grains of red dot and gotten one hole groups at 30 yards. Really smack a squirrel and do not carry as far as a .22 lr.

I know this is an old post but I thought I would bump it since Squirrel Season Started in Ohio.

Any load suggestion for a light squirrel killer load with the: I just cast up a few hundred for a 32acp and since it is 311, I want to try it in the Mauser. ( 30-06)

I noticed that a size “O” buck has a diameter of 0.320.   I have a Lee mold for 0.311 round ball.  Would this work in place of the “O” buck?

I have used a Lee push through sizer .314 and pushed a .320 ball through that then loaded in a 7.62 X 54 with great results. 4 or 5 grains of Red Dot very accurate at 25 yards and quiet about like a 22 short.

I too use loads like these. Mine is a 98grain cast bullet (I bought a box of 17lbs from somewhere) and 3.7-4.0 grains of W231. I also use jacketed bullets of appropriate size and 100grains with 25-30 grains of 2400. seat them in the brass to the same point they would be seated in a handgun load - i.e. the cannalure.
