Used equipment

Rather than buy all new equipment, I decided to check out what's on Ebay for the last few weeks. Sizers, moulds, furnaces, etc. have all come up for auction. These guys bidding on this used equipment have more money than brains! A used RCBS sizer went for about $115 or so. I can buy one new for $144 that I know hasn't been abused. A Lyman mould went for $38 I believe. I can buy the same one new for $8 more.  Evidently these guys haven't heard of Midsouth, Graff, or even Natchess. An old Star sizer is just over $200 with a while to go on the auction.  For the difference in money, I'll go with new stuff and it'll last me for what time I have left in the shooting sports.

Slinger While EBay or EvilBay as we call it around here, may not be the place to get the best deal on used equipment. I agree that these guys more times than not, have more money than brains, if you have used stuff to peddle.. Well you see where this is going...

I have got to admit I have on occassion picked up a deal on a mold here and there on Ebay. Mostly 4 cavity pistol molds..

What I do is have a window open to Ebay and one open to say MidwayUSA.. if there is something I want that looks like it is in good shape I will put in a maximum bid of 80% of what the item costs new at Midway. If it goes over that, I just shake my head and think “Well I guess that fellow has more money than brains” Ego's rule on Ebay, if you are looking for a deal, youmust exersize restraint.

I agree with you, but I won't go the 80%. I've gotten only a few “deals” on Ebay. Of course some of the sellers on Gunbroker are just as bad with their starting prices. If you figure in shipping on the item(s) Midsouth, Graff, etc. are better deals. Oh well, just wanting to vent...I don't understand peoples' logic sometimes.

I got most of my casting equip. from ebay and gunbboker more from gunbroker. I just look regularly if I see a deal and it is something I can use I bid but I never go higher than 60% of new price. I think some sellers think there products are gold, someone has a new RCBS 458. 300 gr. flat point on gunbroker the buy it now price is 80.00 they need to look at midsouth then rethink there price.

Yep, the used  market has been “nuts” for some time and it doesn't look like it's going change any time soon. There is some reasonable opportunities out there once in a while if you happen to be in the right place at the time but not many. I don't have too much of a problem with the ridiculous prices that the sellers are asking but it's the air headed buyers that are so willing to shell out the money who are the cause. If no one was buying then nothing would be selling either.

EBay was a good place to get rid of extra gear. I used to buy whole reloading setups for a lump sum, keep the gear I wanted and sell the rest on eBay and usually I came out with more money than I spent in the first place. Remember, there's no one holding a gun to the heads of the buyers, if they want to pay a lot then that's their business. There are occasionally reasonable prices on eBay, and some times there are used items that are simply no longer available new. What's an item worth? Whatever someone is willing to pay.

I don't use eBay much at this point as they are anti-gun. There are better places to do business.

These days, people are getting rid of their junk and keeping the good stuff. I think it has to do with the incoming administration.

I like buying stuff that has some kind of warranty on it, so I buy new from places like Midsouth and Midway. I do come across some molds at the auctions that are no longer produced and then I will only bid up to a point.

I don't buy much from eBay. I used to buy more but I don't like paypall since they started jerking George around. I do get notified of “auctions” all the time though. This was sold for $257.00 with shipping on July 3rd last year. I wish I had saved the picture. There was more. I didn't know if it was appropriate to tell y'all about it or not. I did post it on one site but it was ignored.

This is a Lyman Super T Type Turret 6 position bullet reloading press. Its in very good condition and includes the following: Bullet case sizer Powder scale Powder measure 2 primer flip trays 2 larger primer tubes 2 small primer tubes Bullet case deburring tool Primer pocket cleaning tool Not pictured is a case lube pad and an RCBS dial calipers. I will throw in 7 sets of dies which include: 2 sets 38 spec/357 mag RN/SWC/WC combo sets. 1 is RCBS the other is LYMAN 45 ACP set 9MM sizer 9MM 3 die set 44 mag/44 spec. I am new to this forum and want to get started in casting pistol bullets so forgive me for barging in here.  I have to agree that the prices on Ebay are high and bid higher by those who won't shop around.  Greed on the part of the sellers and then emotions on the part of the bidders.  I think the sellers may also put in false bids to bid up the prices.  Things sell though, even at high prices or Ebay, Gun Broker and Auction Arms would not be so popular.

Bottom Line.  Some people have more dollars than cents (sense) (pun intended).

If you think eBay is bad, I went to an auction of used shooting supplies this past weekend and watched people bid double what items cost new. Used LEE single cavity RB moulds sold from $20 to $28.  A Midway case tumbler sold for $65 and used loading dies for $30. just to name a few. My only guess is that some people must never read a catalog or visit a sporting goods store.

I've sold some old reloading stuff on ebay over the past few months.

I set my starting price at the least I would take for it and no reserve.  I got more than I would have paid for it but did not make any sales for what I thought were “stupid” prices.  Nobody is being forced to buy anything from ebay.

Here is another way of looking at it;  I've bought a couple of new sets of Redding dies that I probably wouldn't have if I didn't know I could get 75-80% of my purchase price back on ebay.

I also have a theory (got a million of them) that folks that buy and sell a lot on ebay consider their paypal balance to be “mad money".

I bid on a Hoch .30 caliber mold this weekend.  It looked like new.  It  sold for $101 and would cost at least twice that to buy new.  I would have bid higher but it wasn't exactly a design I wanted.

Ya know there are several of us CBA members that bid on stuff on Ebay.. We should in the CBA members area start a post and let each other know what our usernames are there so we dont try to outbid each other.

What do you guys think?

I sure agree with that.  Maybe a CB1, CB2 or some such in a comment would let others on our CB list know.

I usually watch when Midway has things on sale, plus on your birthday at Midway, you get 10% off off an order that you place on your birthday.

Last year I didn't realize that Midway did this, so this year I have my list ready. :D

I forgot to mention look at the for sale areas on many of the forums, I get a lot stuff that way and also sell stuff that way.

I find all of those on line auctions sites a rip off. You can't beat Graf and Sons for product and postage pricing. When you see a sporterized 03A3 with 90% reblue for a staring bid of $475.00 something stinks. I'll admit reading these ads are great entertainment. But I'd never shop there. If you do shop there you'll discover you're not saving much. George

I have nothing what so ever to do with ebay, for many reasons that I won't bore you with, however most of my kit is second hand mainly bought from swap and sell forums on boards like this.

Next best is from gun shops I visit and then direct from fellow shooters.

I in no way feel disadvantaged from being an ebay free zone.
