I plan to shoot my .257 Roberts in the Hunter class but the bullet I have is forced too deep in the case neck. I feel throating the barrel would solve my problem but I'm not sure that I can and the rifle be legal. Your remarks are appreciated

you can modify the bullet to allow seating further out..... noe makes a nice nose-sizing gadget that does that . it costs less than having a gunsmith re-throat your barrel.

or use a ” nose rider ” mold that has a nose that casts a sliding /engraving fit as cast .... nose diameter can be tweaked by varying the alloy .

myself i would choose a nose sizer; the noe has interchangeably sized inserts .

just some thoughts. keep us informed of your progress......somebody out there is bound to figure out these cast bullet sometime ...( g ) ...

I am assuming that you are using a bore rider bullet. If after chambering and extracting, do the lands leave a mark on the end of the nose or do the rifling marks appear on the first driving band? If on the first driving band, the throat is short. If on the front of the nose, it is two big for the bore. The fix is then to size the nose down not re- throating.       Yep, what Ken said. NOE's push through sizer is one of the best tools for fitting cast bullets to the throat and bore that has come along in a good while. Not only will it seat gas checks and size bases but has the capability to size noses in .001's increments. Which then permits one to fit the noses to the bore as close as is possible.        So not only can one fit the the bullet to an existing throat and the nose perfectly to the bore in any gun but one can then use bore riders that other wise wouldn't be able to because of the problem that you noted. Providing that the mold casts big enough of coarse.    One added benefit that I have noticed when using NOE's nose sizing bushings is that it makes the noses uniformly round. Even when lightly sizing and out of round bullet.          I have been using this kit for all my bore riders in .30's and most recently for my Contender 7mm-Waters.

As Mr. Campbell and Dupraz have said. the NOE sizing system is a very nice tool for cast bullets. Body and nose sizing bushings to make bullets fit just right. Also, the case neck expanding plugs that work like the Lyman M-die are a great way to adjust neck tension. My 30 cal. rifles are all over the place on throat and bore measurements and the NOE system allows one mould to serve for many rifles. High on my favorite tool list! Thanks NOE. Gp

Thanks for all in input but a conversation with a fellow shooter has me thinking about having a mold made by LBT. As usual cast bullets have yet another way to take my lunch money:-).
