Howdy Pards Note that the caliber of interest is the 38 S&W (not 38 Special) and the pistol used is a WWII Smith & Wesson model made for the British, hence 38 S&W. The pistol is of relatively recent vintage and modern production, at least compared to the late 1800's/early 1900's, and has been cleared by my gunsmith for factory ammo (side note: 38 S&W factory is not cheap and getting more difficult to find) and factory-spec reloads. I have Lyman mould 358212 which, as luck would have it, throws as-cast bullets at .360 which matches the groove diameter of my pistol. Nominally a 146 grain bullet, my mould using wheel-weight lead throws bullets that are closer to 150 grains. I have a fair amount of Titegroup and Trail Boss and would appreciate any info you good Pards could furnish for loading data for them that will approximate 38 S&W ballistics. My pistol is lots stronger than some of the top-breaks from turn-of-the-last century but , nonetheless, in respect for that WWII Veteran, I definitely want to stay within pressure limits of factory 38 S&W ammo.
Appreciate any info you good Pards can furnish! Thanks Fort Reno Kid

Lyman Cast Bullet Handbook, 4th Edition (2010) on p.253 shows the following data:

358477 150-grain SWC, OAL 1.07"

Start 2.0 Titegroup, 684 fps, 9,900 cup Maximum 2.2 Titegroup, 717 fps, 11,600 cup

358311 160-grain LRN, OAL 1.15"

Start 1.9 Titegroup, 616 fps, 8,200 cup Maximum 2.2 Titegroup, 696 fps, 11,500 cup

358430 195-grain LRN, OAL 1.175"

Start 1.5 Titegroup, 534 fps, 9,400 cup Maximum 1.7 Titegroup, 602 fps, 12,400 cup.

These should get you started.

Maybe somebody else can help with Trail Boss? In my circa 1930 Colt Police Positive in .38 Colt New Police I have had wonderful results with Accurate's 36-155D with 2.5 grains of Bullseye which is a wee bit warmer than US factory, but approximating the velocity of Fiocchi, and is proven safe in the S&W Hand Ejector, Webley and Colts. This load shoots to the sights of my Webley & Scott Mark 4.

The IMR general instructions PDF for Trailboss includes a formula that will work fine for your cartridge:

I would call Hodgdon about both. TiteGroup could be a bit too “spikey” for good loads (when I see 0.2gn from start to MAX, I usually skip that powder entirely) and TrailBoss might not work well (just seems like a very small case for TrailBoss), but they should know and have data.
