Help with Accuracy

I have recently purchased an old Savage 110L. Throughout the past few day, I have been using dummy rounds to  try and get the rifling to engrave the front of the bullet, out  of these tests, the only dummy round to engrave has been a RD 7.62x39 mold. I have tried three other molds for these dummy rounds;including a Lyman 311299, a 311291, and a RCBS 180gr flat nose, all three have hit on the front driving band before they had engraved the rifling. Is there any hope for these molds, or should I just continue with the 7.62x39?

You need a bullet which is designed to fit the throat of the 7.62x39.  I don't know how the Savage barrels are throated or if the follow they CIP drawings at all.  The SAAMI chamber is different.    Lyman and RCBS molds are undersized in the forepart except for new .30 cal. barrels. Their noses are not tapered, but of two cylindrical diameters. I would recommend upsetting a pure lead slug into the throat and having a mold cut to fit.A proper design should cast the same as throat diameter and have a tapered nose which matches the forcing cone angle. Accurate would be your best bet to get an affordable custom mold which actually “fits,” because you can tweak diameters from the basic drawings when you order. Swede Nelson at NOE is also able to do this within the limits of his process.  He makes a faithful copy of my bullet design for the 7.62x39 which shoots well in most rifles.

The 314299 also shoots just fine when the barrel/throat/leade/forcingcone is a little bigger. All you need is a bullet that seals the front of the chamber so gas can't go by. 5 shot 5 group averages under 2” are fairly simple. Getting < 1.5” is a little tougher, but still fairly easy.

Here's my best advice. Shoot the rifle. Don't fiddle around making chamber casts or forgings or bullet fit or all the science, shoot and record the results. Try different bullets if you must, but 31X299 WILL shoot in any decent barrel, if any bullet will. If you can't get either 311 or 314 299 to shoot, switch barrels. Go to SavageShooters.com and learn about the 110 family of guns. You can buy a 308 or 30-06 barrel there for $50 or less. There's probably a Savage guy nearby who'd help you change the barrel. It's a 15 minute job. If you can't find a barrel, I've got several 308 barrels to lend or sell. Buying a custom mold is expensive, frequently results are indifferent, and a new barrel is less money. Where do you live?

Mike, is your 110L chambered for 308 Winchester?

It is common for bore riding noses to drop out  of the mold undersize (because if they were oversize then they wouldn't chamber and customers would complain) and it is common for (cheap) barrel dimensions to vary.

Another option is to coat the bullets with Hi-Tek to build up the diameter.

Agree with what Ed & Joe said even if they don't agree with each other.  :D  :D  :D

just curious but what is your savage chambered for now ??

factory chambers are often throated too long as well as too large ....so the average shooter can run different brands and loads through it and still hit a deer at 80 yards.

that said, i have seen factory rifles shoot extremely well ... better than most match rifles ... mostly a matter of luck of the draw at the gun store .

keep posting here , we like to help cast shooters improve their results .

First of all you need to find out what you have so that you can figure out what you need.        I would do a pound cast of the throat, leade and bore. Then measure each. Sounds like either a Lyman or NOE 314299 or larger, might be in order with that likely worn throat but you won't know until you find out. Then, the nose and base can be sized to fit the throat and bore with the correct sized NOE push through sizer bushings.
