I got a couple off Gunbroker this month. One looks like a Sears job sporter but the barrel is about 24” and still has the issue front sight. The matching bolt is bent, looks as issued. Any idea what I've got?

I've got an 1893 Argentine carbine with a barrel length of 21.3".

I would search for Engineers Rifles and Carbines for the 1891, as lots were sent back to Germany and rebuilt. There are many odd-balls out there. However, I am not an expert, just an observer! Ric

The barrel has been cut back.I'm guessing the issue front sight is at the very front of the muzzle.Rifle length barrel as 29.13 inches.Carbine barrels were under 20 inches.I can measure the barrel on a carbine I have if needed. The bolt was probably bent by the importer.

I have 3 Ludwig Loewe M1891's (pre-1896). One short rifle (with originally bent bolt handle) and 23” from crown to rear of receiver ring. (I sometimes read this shape bolt-handle as “bent down". It does not clear a receiver-mounted scope).  And 2 long rifles - having straight bolt handles and barrel length of 30” crown to rear face of receiver ring.  All 3 have matching serial numbers (quite elaborate! Any part with room for a number has one!).  All are incredibly beautifully built and finished. All are delightful with CB's (Lyman 314299 head & shoulders the best.) I have reason to expect that most (if not all) “short” rifles were issued with the turned-down bolt handle. I've never known officially why, but such would be logical for artillery, tank, and mounted cavalry use? (Well, Shucks! Come to think about it - there was nothing “rational” about the straight bolt handles from the git-go - for any assigned use.)
