I was given a 740 30-06 by a family member. I asked before and know their failings. This rifle probably has less than 150 rounds through it. I pulled the fore-end off and you can shuck the action as a pump very easily. Wile the rifle is still in good shape I may plug the gas vent and make a pump fore-end attached to the action bar assy. I know theirs a smith in MN. that specializes in this conversion but I don't see why what I want to do won't work. All the gas does is slam everything back I can do that manually with no hammering to the action. Thanks Frank C.

Should work. Please make sure that the plug doesn't let go and hurt somebody.

the rem. 740 gets a bad rap that is only partly justified ... mostly because if you don't keep them greased and free of grit they can wear out parts that cannot be rebuilt .
but they are actually a great hunting rifle . use a moly filled grease on the sliding contact parts and they will last for a long time .
my brother hunted all over the midwest with one for 30 years ... shot under 2 moa with factory ammo .

Gents, A very general question about the Remington pump/semi-auto rifle family: does the pump-gun have a better reputation for accuracy than its semi-auto sister? They have always seemed to me to be great candidates for a woods rifle, but the accuracy question has worried me, and I'm wondering if one action-type has an accuracy advantage over the other. My 870 Rem. 12 ga. pump shotgun, with rifled barrel, will toss its favorite slugs into 2 1/2 m.o.a., and I'd think an honest-to-God, made-from-stratch rifle would do better, but I've heard some disparaging words about the Remington semi-auto rifle. Just wondering if the pump rifle usually does better. Lemme know if you've had any direct experience with either of the two action types. Thanks and happy trails, -- Cary Gunn --

Cary, I don't have a real good answer for your question but have read that the pump and semi shoot much better than expected. I'am sure their are some dogs but they for sure have hunting accuracy. Frank C.

I've seen a lot of the semi's and I have had two of the pumpers. Our club has a sight in day to raise wampum. Here in Wisconsin a lot of guys like that woodsmaster. They shoot as well as a lot of off the rack bolt guns..sometimes. The worst I've seen do about 4” at 100 but who knows how well the operator is operating? They need to be kept clean inside or they wear themselves out.
