To listen to while casting/lading. Maybe a little dxing. I like analog tuning, the way it used to be. Good radio? place to plug in antenna maybe? <$100? hanks; joe b.

OR ebay and do a search for (if you want a GOOD one, but old and affordable):
Vector Research receiver.
(I have 2 that I bought new years ago. Top notch engineering design and with continuously variable tuning.)

Thanks. I'm looking for a new radio, analog tuning, the b est working <$100 radio. Walmart/Target has nothing, Radio Shack is gone, it looks like buying on the net is the only option. joe b.

i go dittos on considering a car radio ,... try salvage yards ... you will need also a 12 volt power supply and speakers of your choice ....but sound will be excellent .
you could get started with computer speakers for $10 ... but sound quality is ... minimal .

Joe,
This the radio I listen to by the lead pot. Runs “almost forever” )ov er 200 hours) on three AAs, has optional external antenna, fits nicely in briefcase or tacklebox for travel, under $100, I think fits all of your criteria, except that it is digital tuning. Lots of memory pre-sets and auto scan function.
The radio covers medium wave 520-1710 kHz shortwave 2300-30000 kHz and the FM band. Unlike most radios in this price category, the GP-5/SSB provides LSB and USB single sideband reception. It has a very unique Easy Tuning Mode (ETM). ETM does more the usual ATS. It scans all frequencies without taking up the memory spaces. So you get quick access to all local stations. Great for the traveller. There are also 450 regular memories (100 AM, 100 FM and 250 shortwave) available for tuning into your favorite stations. Another unique feature of the radio is its removable high sensitivity external AM ferrite antenna. This directional antenna clearly enhances AM band reception. The CountyComm GP-5/SSB even employs DSP (Digital Signal Processing) technology, improving clarity and tone quality. There is even an adjustable sleep timer. This radio has been completely redesigned by our engineers and the factory to be a important part of both your survival and fun kit. Its performance surpasses that of radios costing 2-3 times more.

joe I know you want a new radio but Im a low voltage contractor and I get pulls from phone system hold music, etc.
I have a panasonic AM/FM radio, about 8 inch square by 2.5 inch thick, sets on a desktop or table easy, I think its battery as well but runs on AC. Antenna is undamaged, tunes very well all bands. Been in a phone room for several years having on a wall by its handle, like they all get installed! Speaker has no use on it as it fed signals to the PBX over 3.5mm Aux output. So its a fresh speaker.
Its $5 plus shipping in USPS FR Medium box. Thats a total of about $16 to you. Hope that fits a budget somehow. Just pulled it out of service for upgrade to HD radio on a business class phone system. Yes its analog, capacitor tuning as you desired.
They don't make them like this anymore. They seem to last forever. I get 2 per year on phone system changeout.

Thanks to all, I'm going for the $5 + shipping radio, maybe the one Ed recommended later. joe b.

I got so enthused about the radio that Ed showed the link for, that I ordered one! I liked the specs of the radio that Ed suggested; lots of useful features. I got the idea that Joe was looking for an old timer, with a blade variable capacitor for tuning, rather than the PLL (digitally tuned new) type: I didn't know if he was just looking for cheap listening, or wanted an antique. Or both, maybe. The variable tuning is perhaps kind of hard to find, except in an old vacuum-tube receiver. Anyway, looks as if he found what he wanted. Good. Bill
In theory, there's no difference between theory and practice. In practice, there is. My fate is not entirely in Gods hands, if I have a weapon in mine.

I would suggest an All American 5 tabletop (tube type) as I am a self proclaimed tube guru, but its just not practical....
Considering the amount of casting Joe does, he'd be buying replacement tubes monthly!!
Thats a funny.
Not the radio part, the heavy casting part.
But ist not funny, I tend to think its true, you guys do a ton of casting. Im jealous..... 'cause you follow that with actually shooting.
Ill make a point of posting when I get radios like this.

I was a radio/radar fixer in the AF, all 550-1600 kc analog tuning, turn the capacitor until IF is 455 kc. ARN6, BC348.
When the digital tuning is a little off, you can't adjust it. I've always liked the volume up-tune slow method, a little DXing. I remember driving back to boston from TX or IL, looking for WBZ at 103 = 1030 kc-when it came in, home was near. Also WWVA, Wheeling WV, where you could “send in $2 and get an autographed picture of JC, and the eyes followed you no matter where you moved in the room". And the Mexican 100 kw stations.
Transistors are much over-rated. Merely a fad.

I also remember well the old 4 course range stations on the sub-400 KC frequencies--talk about atmospherics! Always got something weird just when you needed the guidance most because of being in “weather.” Crappiest reception, just when it was most needed. Juggling the radio tuning, gain, and trying to keep the headphones on your head so you could identify the “cone of silence” to determine just where the hell you were. Been there, done that; VHF proved much better. Saved a lot of lives because of much more accurate navigation. Bill

MikeThanks Mike. I got the radio, put it in the workshop and it works great. Side by side with two digitally/automatically tuned radios, the analog/slide tuned radio is way better. The auto tuned radios are less sensitive, and selectivity is a problem. Over time components have changed so that tuning for weak stations is slightly off, frequently bleeding into the next step. Enough of that, the radio from Mike solves that problem. Thanks again Mike! joe b.
