Has anyone a) tried it or b) been successful at it?

not yet but i have eyed the 17 bee as a likely project.... that would bee such a hoot !!
i would bee interested if you have worked out the numbers for a long high bc 17 bullet design and the twist required ...
i do have a lilja 204 barrel for a similar project, but not so much different from a 224 ... now SEVENTEEN ! ... that appeals to my bizarre disdain for the boring ...

a 17 mold would take a very thin y fragile boring bar, especially for a long bullet ..... but the challenge is the fun .... kinda like building matchstick sports stadiums ...

I rebarreled a Ruger #1 to 17 Akley Bee, fun to play with but everything is more expensive. After the novelty wore off I screwed the 223 barrel back on. If someone is serious about 17 cast they should ask some of the custom mold makers they may have a cherry. Probably swaging would be more successful. Frank C.

Frank - I'd had the idea of swaging in the back of my mind too. One would thing that the SERIOUS air-gun folks would have ventured into this world. I'm just getting started with what is likely to be a 17 Jet. (Won't know till I do a chamber cast.) 20 - 25gr bullets would be an interesting challenge for a higher-velocity than an air-gun back yard ground-hog gun.

No, nobody yet has been dumb enough to make a 17 cal mold.
Yet.
22's don't shoot, maybe 17's will be worse.
joe b. Still bored stiff. What do I have to do to get banned from this salute to nonsense?
It's a challenge, Joe. Off-hand is my worst position for shooting - that is also a challenge.
Do you really want to know what it takes to get banned? Come on! Make a real contribution to the knowledge base here. I have NO sympathy for folks that get bored.
Nonsense? When is a legitimate question nonsense?

Hmmm. First a little research:

gas checks ... heck pellet rifles don kneed no stinkin gas checks ...
yeah, a swage should be considered ...
a guy could take a bag of O or OO buck and make a lot of 17 bullets ...
one incentive for me would be that a couple years ago i bot 2000 mj 0.180 bullets from midway they were dumping for 2 cents ea ... now i am a man with bullets y no rifle for them ...
i like the idea of a rimmed case and the bee has better cases than the hornet .... of course there is always the jet, or 38 special/mag necked down ....sure would have lots of brass ... how about an ai jet tho ... could bore that chamber, save $230 in reamers ...

TRK, If your handy get a block of aluminum or cast iron and a twist drill the size you want. Drill the length of the bullet you want to try or several different legnths. then drill a small hole from the bullet nose to the other side of the block. A pin punch could be used to push the cast bullet out and kinda hollow point it. Use good lube on the smooth slug. May be worth a try. Frank C.

Yea. I think it's time (when I get the rifle here) to play with some home-made projo's. (I do have a milling machine and a lathe - it's just a matter of TIME!)

Make up your mould a couple of thousandths shy and powder coat them. No need for lube grooves. Gp
