Thought you folks may want to see some heavy weight attempts using powder coated drive bands only, using bare nose technique for bore riders. This is accomplished by capping the noses of the bullets with .380 ACP cases pre-powder coat. This is a subsonic 240 GR Saeco mold #352 FP. These are over 4 GR Unique engaging the rifling and chronographed at 787 FPS. I plan on moving up to 4.5 GR Unique in hopes of accoplishing 1000 FPS. The cases were made by cutting down .357 MAX to a case length of just under 1.400 which is .008” short of maximum length that a .357 Handi Rifle will accept. G.P.

Hmmm. We do BLUE powder-coat at work; wonder how that would work?
Let us know how the 240gr Saeco works - I've wondered how well it gets aligned in the bore. I'd love to try it with my .35 Whelen and .358 Win.

TRK: I lucked out with this Saeco #352, I bought it second hand. It looks to have been slightly honed or maybe just cleaned up. The nose section fits the bores of both my 35cal. Handis (357mag and 35Rem) with just a slight burnish. That the reason for the bare noses. As far as I know, powder coat is powder coat and what color it is only matters in that some are slick, some are matte and some crinkle as in truck bed liner. I use Cardinal powder I get from a local custom shop. A really good trick is if you know anyone in the trade, get them to save you their over spray or maybe just get some from work. Coating shops are pretty tidy by nature and collected overspray works just as well, you just will have gray-brown bullets not pretty colors. A box full would be a life time supply and free. We casters love FREE! GP

TRK,
I have been shooting the SAECO #352 for a couple of years in my 35 Whelan and 358 Norma. It is an excellent grouper in the Norma, and very good in the Whelan. The Norma is a Bob Apex / Monty Kennedy sporter from the 50's with 1/16 four groove. The Whelan is a modern 3 groove 1/16 that I have not got perfected yet. The Springfield barrel needs a little more attention in the bedding department, I think.

Hello!!! Here's something I hadn't heard or thought of before! (Powder Coat) I guess the the function is fairly ovious, but what's the theory and why does it work? OK - how WELL does it work? Do you spray & bake? Tell me more------

Good morning Mustafa: There is more information on Powder coat at Cast Boolits web site than I could pass to you in a week. Look in the Coatings and Alternative thread for ways, means and uses. Best I can tell you briefly is its a lazy mans paper patch(polymer) If you and I were talking fishing, paper patchers would be the fly tie people and powder coaters would be bait cutters. We both catch fish(most of the time) It's just another way of placing a barrier between lead and bore. GP

How do you like powder coating, gpidaho ?
I have flirted with the shake & bake method a few times. Only once did it turn out satisfactorily, so one of these years I'll prolly get a spray gun. Or else try the hi-tech style coating.

mtngun: I'm totally sold on powder coat, I rarely lube a bullet these days. That said, I don't shoot benchrest or any competitive discipline for that mater. Just not my interest. I really like the cleanliness of coating both in the tools we use and in the guns we shoot. Other than a lube substitute it is also a great sizing tool (think paper patch) Check out Caswell Inc. for a look at the electrostatic gun I would recommend. The shake and bake method will work (especially in handguns) but is just a hillbilly second best to electrostatic application, that is the way PC was designed to work. PM me anytime to trade thoughts, that will save the bench guys my rambling from the pulpit. lol Gp
