Deer Season

Well, I didn't think that I was going to have any luck at first. Saw a lot of deer . . . a lot. All moving fast thru the woods & couldn't get a shot through the trees. Had a shot at one standing still between two trees but it would have been a gut shot so I wouldn't take it.      Next time I went out I knew I would be watching open ground & the shots could get very long so I took the 7MM Remington Magnum with full power jacketed. Well, I did see deer & the shots were long & I took two VERY large doe. (Didn't see any horns & it was the end of rifle season). One thing about deer in Maryland, the deer here graze on corn & soybean (unless you're out in western Maryland) & it's not uncommon to get a deer at 200 lbs. before being dressed. Yes, we do raise some big ones.      So . . . off to an Amish butcher they went. 2 neck roasts that will be done in the crock pot with 'taters, carrots & onions, butterfly steaks from the backstrap, bologna, deerdogs & hamburger. Doesn't get any better than that. Pat

If someone else had of done to me what I did to myself . . . I'd have killed him. Humility is an asset. Heh - heh.

Neck roast is wonderful and rarely gets the credit it deserves. Funny how my wife and I take great pains to trim the meat so thoroughly for every other cut, yet neck roast has fat layers and that cord running through it plus the spine and yet it is delicious.

I have quit the neck roast since the CWD thing. I will say it always rated right there with back straps and loin with me.

We watch the deer picking over the harvested corn fields and eating nice alfalfa. “It's time time to share that stuff Bucky". “See you in November!". Neck roast is coming later. I love the back straps cut in cubes and stuck in HOT peanut oil till the count of ten then salted. I converted my wife to venison in no time this way. Rosie Odonell would eat venison if she tried this.

Pat; Congratulations! My hunting days are over (just too old and feeble to drag a deer out of the woods, these days) but I can sure remember some good times in the woods with my favorite revolver. Frankly, I prefer a nice doe but have to admit, that even the bucks around here (SW Ohio) being corn and bean fed are super good fare. Not like those mountain Whitetails that I have eaten that were so rank you had to open the windows when cooking them:(

Happy New Year! Dale53
