Learned something new today! This is just a reminder to stay vigilant when shooting with those of less experience. Took the son inlaw to the range today as he was home from Florida. We took along one S&W Revolver one Ruger. Also Handi rifles 30-30 and 357mag. Well what I learned is that 357mag will chamber and fire in a 30-30. No apparent damage other than a ruptured case, bullet went down range and even hit the target, that's some swage. Glad it was powder coated soft lead not a J-word. We were lucky here, please stay alert to others even if it makes you look a little over the top on safety procedures. Another lesson learned! GP

Like most of us who are experienced I forget just how inventive the uneducated can be. Thanks for the heads up gpidaho. It is also a testament to just how strong a handi rifle can be and how much a bullet will swage down. brodie

gpidaho; You are welcome. I have heard of other accidental chamberings; a 308 win in a 270 win, 308 in 7mm mag. etc. We all are familiar with the 20ga. in a 12ga. shotgun, and I can remember when all the shells regardless of guage were red which facilitated the accident. When Winchester was testing their fiberglass wrapped shotgun barrel one of the engineers even dropped a 20 ga. int a 12ga barrel and shot a 12 ga shell to prove just how strong the barrel was. I hope he did it from a distance. It is easy to do and we all should take heed and be extra careful. Brodie

gpidaho: Thanks for the worthwhile post. Everyone who engages in this firearm business, including us “experts,” need a reminder once in a while. As a card carrying member of the over the hill gang, I do and have gotten by with some things that I shouldn't have. Example: Not firearms but think it applies. I have flown and built radio controlled aircraft for 20+ yrs. From the little glow powered planes to 3 1/2 HP twenty pound gassers. The other day, in an attempt to adjust a carburetor, I stuck my hand through a running prop. Drew blood on inside of my wrist. Not a good place. Luckily, it was a small engine.*=++?? Yes, I knew better!! My poor guardian Angel must be just about worn out by now.

when i started reloading and was at approximately point ZERO, i locked the door and had a loader book in one hand ... i wonder today how many accidents will be caused by cell phone distractions ...
patience, not Patients ...

I have a friend who came out the range one morning with a new to him, '03 Sringfield in '06 and a quart ziplock bag full of assorted surplus '06 FMJ ammo that came with the rifle. He was banging away fat dumb and happy when I hear him say, “that one did not feel right". I turned around just after he opened the bolt and he was holding a fired case in his hand with a perplexed look on his face. In his fingers was what appeared to be a shorter than normal '06 case missing the neck. He initially thought that the upper half of the shoulder along with the neck had cracked off and went down the barrel. While he was checking out the barrel to make sure nothing was stuck part way down I was looking at the case, something was not right, the extractor groove was too big for starters and the 2nd item was the head stamp; AFF 90. Somewhere along the way a 7.62 Nato round got mixed in with the '06 fodder. Thankfully he was feeding the rounds from the magazine and extractor had a nice firm grip on the rim and held it tight against bolt face when firing pin hit, in addition to the primer being crimped in place. Talk about excess headspace. Fortunately both he and the rifle are fine. He did not want the case, which now sits on the shelf in my loading room along side of other oddities and close calls perpetrated by others that I have picked up over the years. Occasionally I will ask him if brought his 30-06 Short out with him. It amazing how many ruptured .30 Carbine cases I come across that dimensionally appear to have been fired in 7.62x39 chambers-- stupid stupid stupid. Michael

A few years back I witnessed a fellow shoot two .357's in a Marlin 336 30-30, he probably would have shot 3 but the second one didn't eject and let him know he had a problem.
Other than two ruptured cases the only other problem was the chamber neck was leaded up from the big swage . He got that cleaned out and continued shooting.

Michael, A few years ago I was hunting mule deer in western Nebraska and the outfitter was also a rancher in his first season guiding hunters. Besides my son and I there were two other hunters sharing the bunkhouse. One of them (hunting for the first time) showed up with a new Ruger 30-06. The outfitter/ rancher asked if his rifle was sighted in he said he hadn't even shot it yet. The guide escorted the rookie to his shooting range while we relaxed in front of the TV watching a football game. (I didn't say it was a wilderness hunt). They were gone quite a while and when they came back reported that they couldn't get the rifle zeroed and the ammo was not working right with the rifle. He showed me a couple of the fired cases and the necks were way too short for a 30-06. Like your friend he had been given a box of 308 Win and had been happily shooting them up. Neither the rookie hunter nor the guide realized they had the wrong ammo. No damage was done to the rifle or rifleman but it was late in the afternoon before opening day and the nearest gun shop was hours away from the ranch. Fortunately my model 70 was an '06 and I gave the other hunter a box ammo. While he missed a 70 yard shot at a big deer, he got a second chance and bagged a smaller deer later in the week. I'm not sure how often shooting a 308 in a 30-06 causes damage but this guy had shot at least half a box of the wrong ammo without any problem. Other than it didn't shoot too well with the bullet jumping so far when fired.

Back in the 40's (I think) my DAD borrowed a winchester lever from his friend Charlie and while hunting Mulies managed to miss the largest deer he has ever seen FIVE TIMES AT UNDER 100 YARDS FROM A SOLID REST. Now Dad was a heck of a good shot and not prone to buck fever. His last round at that buck cut a branch off which fell on the deer and made him run off. Subsequent trials proved that you could not hit an apple crate at 25 yds with the rifle and ammo. It turned out that Charlie had taken the new model 94 on an antelope hunt and gotten it mixed up with the guides 94 in 32 Win. Charlie still thought that the rifle was his 3030 and gave the rifle and 3030 ammo to Dad. Those .308 bullets were bouncing down the barrel of that 32W and who knew where they would go upon exit. It cost Dad one heck of a deer, but he won 10 Dallars when Uncle Whitey couldn't hit an apple crate at 25 yds. with it. Brodie

no doubt the guide had an interesting time chambering those 32 specials in a 30-30 .
murphy gets around a lot, it seems.

I'm sure that he did. Lets hope that he never managed to close the action and fire it. Brodie
