Have any forum members used the Ness safety bullet? I am looking at a .311 mold with this configuration. I was wondering about 100 yard accuracy. Also wondering if it expands or fragments depending on alloy mix? I would be loading it in 30-40 Krag in a 1895 winchester and 30-06 03A3. thanks, mike

Here is what he is talking about. This seems like a good idea, but I have no experience with it. Hmm, I may take some .311 cast bullets, chuck them in the Forster hollow pointer backwards and try this concept. I have read that some rifle bullets shoot better backwards at subsonic velocity.

Although I've not worked with this bullet, I have studied it some. Reportedly, it is intended to be shot with a
hard, brittle antimonial alloy in order to shatter in the target, or on impact in case of a miss, reducing chances of
ricochet. Hope this helps, and others who know more, please chime in!

I don't know about a hollow point mold but I think a solid basically wad cutter bullet would give some stability issues at 100 yards. I could be wrong though.

Pat a full wadcutter, such as used in 38 Special target shooting is very dependent on the rifling twist. I doubt any of the leveraction carbines would stabilize it with their relatively slow slow twists. In revolvers many favored the Colts with their 14 twist over the Smiths with their 18 3/4 twist.

Tony this is a picture of a 1.070 30 caliber mold I tried in my 30/06 10 twist both coated and conventionally lubed. Velocities ran from 1200 to 1600+. No matter what it was tipping pretty bad. I sent some out to George Damron to try in his 06 and he had the same results. I think the shape is too much like a wadcutter for best results. I tried tapering it and the results were the same. Another thing I dont like about that bullet being dicussed is theres no dimensions on it.

Here's 2 other 30 caliber bullets I'm playing with. They're both within .005 oal and 15 grains to the bullet above and they fly straight as an arrow. But as usual the only way to find out if something will shoot is to plop down your Benjamins and find out.

I had Erik Ohlen make me a .30 Ness safely bullet copy 10 years ago.I think Ed Harris ended up with it?
I never had accuracy past 50 yards with it.
"if it was easy we'd let women do it" don't tell my wife I said that!

It looks like i better try to do a little more research before i pick up one of these molds. The seller does not supply dimensions. Only that it is .311 diameter and casts a 170gr. solid or 145gr. hp. I can't seem to find to much info on these.

Don’t waste your time, I have one. Cramer 301 turned into the “Safety Slug”. Only kept 2 targets, the PATTERN it made was under whelming at 100 yards and that is with a 40X. But I did keep them all on the paper. The holes they cut were as sharp as the holes from the 3 hole punch. Charge was 15 gr 5744 should have used 20 to 24 gr for better luck. Have a lot of better molds to use than this one. This mold is going to sit on the back of the shelf a long time before I use it again.

I calculated the twist for the full 175 grain cast bullet at 2,200 fps. It came back as 18.7 inch twist. For 1,000 fps, I got a more reasonable 12.7. Usually instability is due to too slow of twist, but I am not sure about way too much.

Don't even go there because that simply isn't true. Ask Bryan Litz.

I dunno
I got a load worked out for mine.
I adjusted the powder thrower bush a little from the first 3 and it shot o.k. At 50yrds.
Can’t remember what it was now cos I didn’t write it down.
In the good old days when we could get pistol powders
single shot 30-30.
My nose comes out a bees Willy under 0.300" and base 0.311’’
I plan to tap a tapered pin to open the nose a thou ,so it will ride on the front edge>
Real scientific.
Weren’t a hot load thou.
Do the job I think to 100yds on most things.
does @ 2" at 100yrds sometimes a little better.
Trust me you can clearly hear the target wump when it hits. Not like those pointy fully metal patched ones.
Sorry has to be one out there.
