The snow has melted and it has finally warmed up here in Pennsylvania. Winter's research and development phase is over, and we can finally get shooting again! The March (unregistered) match at The Tamaqua Rifle and Pistol Club was cancelled due to inclement weather, but we were able to hold our first BR match of the 2026 season (also unregistered due to unpredictable weather this time of year) on April 5. Six shooters showed up and a good time was had by all. After being in hibernation since the beginning of last November, I was happy to see that Old Red (my Unrestricted Pistol) still liked me and put most of its shots where I wanted! Thanks go out to Match Director Gary Sterner for putting on another successful match and to those who participated.

Our first CBA match is 2 May. I suspect we will have 6-8 shooters UNLESS a blizzard pays an unexpected visit. They have happened this time of year in central MN and WI, even later than early May. Several years ago I got pre-maturely eager and set our first match for mid-April. 8 shooters but 17” snow the night before! Ever since then never until 1 May or later.

Region 2 Leetown WV has held two shoots this year. March & April. Both attended with five shooters. 3 members and 2 non members. Conditions for this time of year were both pretty good. We need to expand our program in a way to attract more non members. These non members enjoy shooting reproduction Sharps. No class to shoot in so no reason to join.

We got really lucky down here in Missouri, Pioneer Gun Club. We shot every match through the Fall and Winter Months. The first time ever! Our match dates just fell on good days, one or two days either way it would be cold, windy, rain, snow, just nasty. We usually have four to six shooters, if we get up to eight that's a biggie for us.

A reproduction Sharps would fall under our Plain Base class.

Piedmont has had 2 matches so far - Feb & Mar

February, we had 19 shooters and the weather was beautiful. 70 degrees, warm and sunny.  March was a whole different story.  We still had a good turn out with 14 shooters, but we about froze to death.  The temperature wasn't bad at 60 degrees, but we had a 20+ mile per hour biting wind.   It gave a whole new definition to "holding off"!!

I would love to see how well reproduction Sharp shooters ( peep sights ) would do against unlimited scope magnification Plain Base Shooters. Get real, this is why we need more classes. Not necessarily for National Tounament.

Dakota Benchrest got our first match done in March.  Had to postpone twice when the Highway Patrol closed the roads due to snow/ice but the third try was actually quite nice.  Hoping for the April match Saturday.  Forecast 60 degrees 30 mph winds and rain.

Regarding a Sharps with irons: I can tell you that they won't do as well as you think they would. Orange 5 bull targets are fine with a plain base rifle and a scope- but absolutely frustrating with iron sights of any configuration. At least that's my experience. Later on I may try one of my Sharps in a match but it is going to be in Unclassified on a black target.

Shootcast and Lucky1 have brought up valid points for a possible new benchrest class. I am going to create a new discussion to gather more information for a potential new class that will work for the majority of those interested.

Ed Krasny started shooing at Washtenaw with a 45-70, black powder, and iron sights. He pasted a black target over each red bull and shot quite well. For those without wind flags, it paid to wait for Ed to shoot and watch which way the smoke went.

A discussion would be a good idea.
