The Brits had special rifles made up by some very famous makers (or in most cases, made up to their standards by smaller firms). The Rook ctg. While acuracy was important, of greater concern was it's lethal range. The Rooks were just leaving the nest and couldn't fly well yet. The target was high in old oak trees, and one didn't want to hit the neighbors cow..or neighbor! A popular caliber was the .360 no.5...very close to the .38 long colt. Later, the .300 Rook & .297/250 were quite popular. Jeffery came out with his own .255 Jeffery which is nothing more than a shortened .25-20 Win. The .22 long & long rifle were never popular at this time (1870-1890) in England..due to its poor performance loaded with black powder.
Are there any rules posted for the Buny match. It would seem any utility rifle used on a farm in the late 19th thru the first few decades of the 20th centuries would qualify. How about the use of revolvers? Elmer Keith wrote he cut his teeth on an old Colt .36 Navy, and later bought a 7 1/2" Colt S.A.A. in .32-20 for small game.

Apart from the ordeal of having to climb a tall tree to post my target in I’m up for crack at this.
I doubt they will allow me to shoot vertically at the range.
‘But I think I have a location.

ground hog or rabbit shoot as in the past were great, I sure would do either.

Well that's just silly talk. You climb the tree and shoot at the target on the ground. That way you only climb to the tree ONCE! Follow me for more sage advice.

The snow in my trees is still 6 foot deep and another foot on the way, so I've got a head start on the climbing problem. My snowshoes are a bit of a problem though.....

I think we should spread the wealth around. I will give advice to who ever runs it.
I will shoot it.
When I ran it last time. Any rifle worked. Make a special class if you want. I have a fine .310 Cadet that would be fun.

Tut tut, both of you guys aren't thinking outside the box....find a tree ALREADY laying down and then shoot standing up along the tree. Don't have to climb and potentially meet the ground unexpectedly at velocity (gravity sucks), a gentle stroll alongside the tree, post target and enjoy the view on the way back to the root system. Jeff wasn't close enough to the earthquake to find any recent fallen and Barra hasn't seen much in the way of cyclones this year.
Enjoy

Longhunter,
Thank you for doing the work to make the earlier matches happen.
I hope someone steps up to take you place. A lot of shooters had a good time in the earlier matches.
Shooters are plentiful. Workers not so much.

Can a few of us get together so not just one doing all the work, I would volunteer just don't have a clue as to where to begin or how to pull it together .
Attached Files
Let's do this. I'll volunteer. We can use these targets https://www.midwayusa.com/product/1014990380?pid=248812
You can buy your own or I can order them and mail two to each shooter. $3.50 gets you two targets. postage paid to you, however I would like to get a count soon so as to be able to order enough to meet demand.
I suggest one shot at each bull and critter with any cast bullet rifle, any field position. One target each at 50 and 100 yards.
@Fitzpatrick if you are willing we could have everyone mail completed targets to you by June 15. You can score them, diamond in middle is X, black center is ten, first ring out is 9 outside of that is 8, off bull circle is 0. Critters is special closest to center, number of participants equals the score on each, add all 4 scores together for overall ranking. For example 10 shooters, dead center hit by just one shooter scores 10 points, Next closest scores 9 points farthest away 1 point.
This assumes we finalize and I order by 4-14, mail targets to shooters by 5-1.
Thoughts? In or not? Deadline for entry with me supplying target is 4-14, after that any shooter that wants to purchase same target on their own is welcome to shoot and submit by the deadline.

How many squirrels are shot at 100y?! (Jeff faints).

How about 25 and 50 yards? That is all I can do with open sights on that target.
Attached Files
Tree rats darn few, ground squirrels more than you can imagine. Prairie dogs, probably millions a year at even further distances. However the target matches the expected rifle. This isn't a rat rifle contest and it's not a jacketed bullet varmint contest. The target offered is 12" x 18', guessing the target circles on left are close to 1.25" and those on the right 1.5"
You want in Jeff?

Good idea Ric! So you are willing to conduct an iron sight match concurrently? Three weeks have passed with no one stepping up to spearhead this and now that I have you want to go with a short range iron sight match? John's OP quotes .-22-10-45 with a" 50 yard and 100 yard match using field positions..." We throwing out ideas that never going to happen or are we going to go with a plan that is on the table? If you don't have what you need to shoot on the target chosen, at the distances chosen well there might be another chance for you in the future. Step up an volunteer.

I'm in for the 25 & 50 iron site shoot. I have several rifles I would like to try, including my .32 S&W garden gun I got from Dan Henk.

Put two packs of the above targets in the cart at Midway....
Then canceled after seeing near $11 shipping.
Got the guns, got the range/s,got the time, heck even have the urge... just have a hard time with those shipping prices.
Pretty sure we have some squirrel paper targets. Will just follow the rules best I can as they get outlined and will even mail these to whomever is scoring.
Mainly as a data point, not to be used for any competitive purpose.

Is there a way a .pdf of an 8-1/2" x 11" target (non copyrighted, of course) can either be posted on the forum or in an area on the CBA website accessible to all? it could then be printed by whomever is interested, shot, and mailed in the with entrance fee to be scored. The scorer can check with his own printed (at 100%) copy of the target as a standard to ensure the submitted target was not enlarged, with the understanding that fees submitted with an enlarged target are forfeited. There would have to be an allowed tolerance for targets printed this way, maybe plus or minus 1/4" for an 8-1/2" X 11" target. Maybe the best thing would be to make an area on the website to house general rules for these shoots as well as targets sent in for addition to the collection by members. These targets could also be printed by anyone for general use. I know I have a few that I can scan and contribute; bison, turkey, etc.

Some more thoughts I have for these 'Informal Postal Shoots'. With any luck this will help make these shoots easier to organize and run;
Wayne

Just practical advice. I got involved in setting up an early “bunny gun” postal. (still not sure what defines a bunny gun) One of our posters had all kinds of suggestions as how to structure the match. Each month a different shooting position or shooting distance or equipment limitation, etc. Lots of suggestions, but….the guy with all the suggestions never shot the march!
So if someone steps-up to take the leadership role, support him and PARTICIPATE. These forum postals are informal and are not an extension of the current CBA Postal program. I can recall when Jim Scearcy and Ken (from Iowa) set up the Groundhog postal. Jim told me he wanted to keep it much simpler than the CBA Benchrest match rules…..and he did. It takes time and effort to run a match so the reward for the “volunteer” is a strong turnout.
However, if an experimental postal gets traction, it could be added to the CBA Postal program as a trial event.
The advice…if you have rule or shooting suggestions for the Forum Postal, be sure you participate. Free advice is worth exactly what you pay for it. These postals NEED participants, so if you have an interest and think so and so should apply, be sure to order the target and shoot!

I totally understand the issue of shipping costs. I already have an active cart, shipping will not be an issue if I buy enough to mail out.
I also have most of a box of large manila envelopes so mailing two targets to each person will not be that big of a deal to me. The $3.50 covers or should in my estimation the cost of the targets plus postage.
I added the "or order your own targets" for the in case someone missed the deadline to say in. That gives folks the opportunity to still participate if they decide late or I run out of targets. I seem to recall that in the coyote shoot a few years ago there was a second order of targets.

I don't want to come across as a curmudgeon but seriously folks after 3 weeks of no one taking the lead I did. I set out the parameters for shoot, identified our target and gave @Fitzpatrick the opportunity to help as he said he wanted to.
Folks wanting shorter distances are welcome to organize their own shoot, please do so.
@Waleone self print targets of 8.5 x 11 are an option for any future matches if that is what the "match director" decides. Thanks for taking the time to formulate rules you think should be used. There is a formal Class and rule change submission process outlined in our Bi-laws and Rules of Competition. Informal postal or forum matches are just that, informal. Donations to the CBA are welcome. Asking someone to collect and forward funds and also run a match that is informal almost guarantees no one will step forward and volunteer. Stepping forward to run an informal match is a great way to volunteer to help out our membership and to see if maybe you want to pursue more formal volunteerism in our organization.
Since this thread has become so long and encumbered with several tangents I will start a new topic.
