Hi and thanks in advance. I will be picking up a cva optima v2 50 caliber that I have on lay away this next weekend. I plan on using black powder and cast grease groove bullets . It’s mostly going to be a science project and occasional deer gun. I have traditional guns but the cleaning through the breech appeals to me. Are any of you guys shooting one of these things and what are you doing to make them work? My end goal is to whack a 12” gong off hand at 175 yards.

I don’t have an Optima but do have a TC Omega. I used the Accurate bullet attached sized .451 with Harvester sabots and 65 through 80 grains of Blackhorn. If I ever drag it out again I'll switch over to black powder and dump the Blackhorn, too expensive. I don't know about hitting 12 inch plates at 175 yards offhand because I don't think I and maybe the bullet would be up to it but I can't see it being anything but successful in the hunting fields.

Good looking bullet. Dane I have about 40 of that bullet I posted the print of that have been laying around here for years. If you have any interest in playing with them and sabots pm me your address and I'll mail them along with sabots for you to try out while deciding on a mold. It's no big deal so don't automatically say no thanks before thinking it over. I just weighed some and they're around 315 grains.

I used to shoot a 350 gr. grease groove bullet cast of pure lead and sized about .41 in my Whitworth 45 cal (.451 across the flats) rifle.  I paper-patched the bullets and resized them to .451 in a push-through die.   They shot quite well at about 900 fps, with the iron sights.  The bullet was from Lyman and intended for the 43 Spanish carbine.

That’s interesting. I have used a similar bullet in another .50 inline rifle with a sabot. It worked pretty well.
