Why is the 40-65 little brother of the 45-70 so neglected? Served me well in competition for years.

It was not a buffalo hunting cartridge, so not as popular. Same story with the 40-50 Sharps Straight, wonderful deer and black bear round, and won lots of matches, but not popular.

The 40-65 seems to be at least as accurate as the 45-70, kicks less and uses less lead. I think people look past it because it doesn’t have the history and wow factor of the 45-70. Neither seem to be as popular as the 45-90 for long range target shooting. If I were starting over with a black powder silhouette set up it would almost certainly be the 40-65. It’s just easier to shoot well.

My Model 74 Sharps (CSA) was ordered in .40-65. (My favorite revolver is .41 Mag. so I have a bias towards 40 cal.)
The rifle arrived in late winter 2009. In Oct. that year I discovered that .40-65 was not an original Sharps chambering, so I sent the rifle back to the factory and had a new barrel installed in 40 cal. 2 1/2 (40-70 Sharps Straight). Both barrels were Badger 16 twist.
The rifle has never seen smokeless powder or jacketed/gas checked bullets. I have a Paul Jones greaser bullet mold and Brooks paper patch bullet mold. Fun to shoot!
That’s just a mental historical “problem”, no reflection on the adequacy of the .40-65.

What do you guys do to reduce nasty hard black powder fouling between shots? For best accuracy I would run wet patch followed by drypatch down barrel between shots. Blow tube did not work as well. Have any of you ever tried grease cookies to keep fouling soft? What works best?

The guys I shot with swore by Swiss 1 1/2 or 2f, .060” fiber wads, SPG lube, and blow tubes. A couple liked lube cookies and paper patched bullets. I shoot duplex loads of 7g of reloader 7 under 68g of 2f compressed 1/10th of an inch. I can shoot 50 rounds if I feel like it without doing a thing between shots unless I let the barrel cool. Then I do two spit patches followed by two dry. The legit matches usually don’t let people cheat like that.
