I had been saving a small polished cow horn that was $1 at a garage sale and located a source of brass parts for powder horns at: <url=http://www.thegunworks.com/custprodgun.cfm?CatID=7&ShowLevel=1>http://www.thegunworks.com/custprodgun.cfm?CatID=7&ShowLevel=1 So I put a small powder horn together that easily holds a days worth of hunting powder. I wanted a small light one for carry, the completed powder horn is only 7” long. First I cut off the tip of the horn to fit a brass spout and plug, this link shows the parts of the plug with removable pour spout: <url=http://www.thegunworks.com/custprodgun.cfm?ProductID=20&do=detail&Cat2Option=yes>http://www.thegunworks.com/custprodgun.cfm?ProductID=20&do=detail&Cat2Option=yes Then I made a wooden base from Cedar and fit the Base Plug, link to base plug: <url=http://www.thegunworks.com/custprodgun.cfm?ProductID=30&do=detail&Cat2Option=yes>http://www.thegunworks.com/custprodgun.cfm?ProductID=30&do=detail&Cat2Option=yes It was just cutting, fitting, gluing and tacking with a little sanding to finish up. I had the epoxy, tacks and cedar scrap and leather lace. the parts were inexpensive and now I have a small practical powder horn for hunting with my Flintlock rifle. Gary

Very nice, soon, if the weather ever realizes it spring you should be able to get out and try to empty it.

Well we have had summer here in normally green Nor Cal and I can not wait for “Hell” when the really hot weather sets in. We should have figured out a way to trade Boston for all of their snow this year.

Had you let us know sooner, we could have shipped you some as well. For a change, we had a real winter in CT.

You do nice work Gary. I'm a mash hammer type myself.

"mash hammer"
... on the 4th of July, I ceremoniously get sour mash hammered to celebrate survival. I am allergic to alcohol so that is a challenging ceremony for me. My tongue gets very fat and swollen and I have had to use an Epi Pen on the 4th of July due to celebrating. My only trick is not to buy a big bottle, because once I start, I am going to drink it all and tell war stories to myself.
I have skipped this for a number of years and haven't voted on this year yet.

I checked the new horn for how much it holds with Alliant BMZ. The horn holds 1,005 grains by weight of BMZ. That is over 12 full power deer hunting shots for me. A good size for carry when hunting deer or squirrel. The best I have ever done in one day squirrel hunting with a Flintlock as a boy was 6 Gray Squirrels with 10 shots, 6 Gray Squirrels is my New York State daily limit.
