Unlike a flatter cartridge like the 30-06, or 270, documenting the bullet trajectory for your handloads is a bit much to handle!  I finally got a chance to see what she does with the Malcom 6x scope. Now with a few minor range POA adjustments, I think I got this! Scope is zeroed at 200 yards.

If you like .45-70 trajectories, you gotta love .44-40!  I run a quarterly Buffalo match, 20 shots off sticks at a steel buffalo silhouette, 300 yards.  Several years ago we added a lever gun class just for fun, so that more shooters could compete.  I switch off between my H&R Buffalo Classic and my Mirouku Winchester 73 in .44-40.  If the wind isn't too bad, I do OK with the lever gun, but the Buffalo Classic combo is much more accurate.  I'm going to be trying your Reloader 7 load next time, I found a pound of it and am hoping for great magical results!

I do load and shoot the 45-70 in an 1886. Though not much because I load it for my dad to hunt with. I do load the 405 and the trajectory is almost identical to the 44-40 to 250 yards.

You may yeild better results with black powder, but for smokeless at that distance, Reloder 7 should not disappoint you at all. However, I do use the 43-214A which is a modified copy of the Lyman 4278098. John Kort's 43-215C is similar but with a crimp groove.

I use 26gr with the 215gr cast bullet. You may not get as good results with the popular 200gr Magma design. Not only that but I chronographer my loads at 1,350fps rather than the neutered 1,190fps. Winchester claimed their 1,320fps 1950's JSP load maintained 990fps @ 300 yards.

Same target, Two different Ranges

50 Yard POA, Shots 1-8 (black)
25 Yard POA, Shots 1-10 (red)

Edited through video shot placements...

50 Yards, shots 1-8, I am not too impressed with my Group but the group did center up a bit on the bullseye.

The 25 yard groups does shot the tightness, with the exception of shot #8, the rest stayed inside 3/4"?
